Eastern state penitentiary in Philadelphia offers a haunting look into the past of this now closed prison.
Walking through the halls of the penitentiary was scary! Reading that it is haunted didn't help.
Built in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary is considered to be the world's first true penitentiary. Upon completion, it was the largest and most expensive public structure ever erected in the United States. Several notorious criminals were held at Eastern State, including Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. The prison operated until 1971, after which it was closed and abandoned.
