A view of downtown Birmingham with a Norfolk Southern locomotive passing by from Railroad Park. Railroad Park is a 19-acre park in Birmingham, Alabama, that opened in the fall of 2010. The park lies immediately south of the Norfolk Southern and CSX rail lines through downtown Birmingham. It stretches from 14th Street to 18th Street along First Avenue South.

The City of Birmingham, under a management agreement with the Railroad Park Foundation, has created a fabulous public space downtown. I was happy to see it being used heavily even on a cold and cloudy day in December.

I was impressed by the extent of re-use seen in the walls and seating areas which are constructed from bricks and objects unearthed on the site when Railroad Park construction began.

This 19 acre green-space was very well thought out and planned. 600 trees are planted with masses of annual, biennial and perennial flowers. The park is 30% water, complete with a beautiful lake and cool rain curtain that is lit at night with LED lights that change color. As you stroll or jog along the parks trails you will see bio-filtrated wetlands and ponds & streams everywhere all irrigated by onsite wells. As the trees start to mature this will only increase the parks awesomeness.

The Park is open 7am-11pm daily. You can visit knowing you are safe as the park is monitored around the clock by a state-of-the-art security system and by rangers on patrol.

Damn Fine Peeps and Suds at the Good People Brewery and Taproom!! Enjoy drinking your beer at tables right out on this working brewery floor.

I would highly recommend a stop for one of their tours that they offer on Saturdays from 2pm to 4pm on the hour.

Signing up online is the best way to go to reserve a slot. Each tour is limited to 15 peeps so... nice and intimate.

$10 gets you a collectible glass and a pint or four 4-oz samples.

The Alabama Theatre was built in 1927 by Paramount Studios as an Alabama showcase for Paramount films. It was used primarily as a movie palace for 55 years. In 1987 the owners of the facility declared bankruptcy and the theatre was purchased by Birmingham Landmarks Inc.

Now the Alabama Theatre for the Performing Arts, it hosts many live events. Each year the Theatre hosts over 300 events attended by a half million People.

In 1998 the Theatre underwent a complete restoration.
