La Palma is a Spanish island located in the Canary Islands archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. Its history dates back to pre-colonial times, when the island was inhabited by the aboriginal Benahoaritas, who lived off agriculture, hunting and fishing. In 1493, La Palma was conquered by the Castilians and became an important trading port on the route to America. For centuries, the island experienced periods of economic prosperity and decline, until a tourist boom began in the 20th century that remains one of its main economic drivers.
Pre-conquest
The history of La Palma before the arrival of the European conquistadors is relatively unknown. The first inhabitants of the island were the Benahoaritas, a people of Berber origin who are believed to have arrived on La Palma sometime between the 4th and 5th centuries AD. The Benahoaritas were a primitive society and are believed to have lived in small communities and were mainly engaged in agriculture and livestock.
The Benahoaritas were an isolated society and had no contact with other peoples of the Canary Islands. The Benahoarita culture was unique and evidence of their rock art has been found in various parts of the island, especially in the area of Las Tricias and in the Los Canarios ravine.
