  • Designed by John S. Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer, construction of the house began in 1860. Construction was interrupted by the American Civil War, and finally completed around 1868 by the new owner, John Wilder. Before Hansford's death, as retold in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the house had already been the scene of two deaths. In 1913, a previous owner tripped over the second floor banister, fractured his hip, and suffered a concussion, dying three days later. In 1964, a boy chasing pigeons on the roof fell over the edge and impaled himself on the iron fence below.

Historic Savannah

The location in the city is fantastic for us. In the heart of the more leisurely part of the city rather than the more touristy part closer to the river. On street parking was quite easily managed. The unit was comfortable with lots of room.

Great Place

We enjoyed our stay here very much! Just a short walk to the Trolly, Forsyth Park, Krogers. We even walked back from River Walk after dinner. Highly recommend!

Our time is Savannah was very enjoyable. The location of the property was advertised. The square close to the property was very nice and the proximity to Forsyth Park was fantastic.

Perfect Place!

We stayed here while in town for our daughter’s wedding. This property was perfect! It was in a great, safe location with plenty of street parking. The home was clean & had all the amenities we needed. It was also very spacious. My favorite part about the property was the bed in the primary bedroom - that mattress is incredible! I want to live there forever.

Beautiful!

This place is amazing. You are less than a block walk from Forsythe Park! This building takes you back in time. The kitchen is beautiful, but does lack a little when being stocked as far as a coffee maker that didn't work and low on some basic kitchen items - but you are by some amazing restaurants so you may not want to cook!

Great location!

Enjoyed a beautiful stay in this spacious and clean apartment. The location was close to everything. Walked to sights and so many restaurants close by. Forsyth Park is right around the corner too. We had a slight concern about parking but turned out to never be an issue. Great few days in Savannah!

Super sweet spot in a beautiful city

This 2nd floor flat is absolutely adorable! Everything is in perfect walking distance, or biking distance if that’s your thing. Very pet friendly as well. Beautiful squares, lots of history, majestic trees and lovely fountains for the photographer in everybody. We had a really nice stay and we’ve already booked our return trip here.

Perfect Savannah weekend

The apartment was historical perfection- spacious and included nice touches like coffee, shampoo and conditioner. The host was very responsive to any inquiries. It was walking distance to everything in Savannah, and just a short drive to Tybee Beach. The front balcony was perfect for your morning coffee.

Great spot, lots of room

This was a really nice place very close to the middle of the historic district. We had plenty of room to stretch out -- the main bedroom was huge; the second bedroom would have been a tight fit for adults but we weren't using it anyway. The kitchen was well appointed in terms of appliances, dishes, etc. The ice maker in the freezer had frozen over, so we needed to mess with that a little bit, but it was fine in the end. Easy to get in and out. Nice place! Would stay there again.

Great location

Great location. Easy walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and sights. I was originally concerned about parking but never had an issue. IWas able to park upfront. I did purchase 3/2 all day parking pass. This was a huge help.

Savannah Thanksgiving

We had a wonderful time! Loved the city and the location of this condo! One block from Hop on Hop off bus which we used to get around easily. Condo was lovely!! Many little extras! Only recommendation would be to add safety bars in tub and shower. Slippery for us seniors.

The unit was very comfortable. Although very scant array of dishware and serving dishes which made it so we had to run the dishwasher when not quite full or wash by hand. For four adults who preferred to eat in most meals this was challenging though not impossible. Just seems like a waste of water. The master bedroom was lovely. The second bedroom was too small for our friends to unpack or even set suitcases so photos are a bit deceiving in that sense. All said we loved the location and would rent again but would be better prepared for what the unit lacked.

Wonderful stay

The condo was beautiful--love the historic architecture, the layout, and the location. The kitchen was well-stocked and great for cooking. The beds were very comfortable. We could walk virtually everywhere--and loved getting to know the city so intimately. We loved sitting outside to read. The condo helped us fall in love with Savannah. A couple of suggestions--having pillow cases for the extra pillows and more towels would have helped a lot. Also, because the parking in front of the condo is paid, we followed the recommendations to use some of the free parking nearby. But, it felt odd to take up parking at the Methodist church or in front of others' buildings. Having some sort of more "legitimate" parking would have been more comfortable. I guess we could just have paid the on-street parking--so maybe that's on us. It was just kind of expensive for a week.
