The space
An architectural gem in a quiet bay on the island of Brač
The house is located in the bay of Povlja that still possesses the authentic charm of a Mediterranean coastal town. It was built in the 60's, designed by a renowned Croatian architect Đeba, a native of Povlja who knew the bay and its natural characteristics very well and this skillfully used the position of the house between the rocks and the sea. He used local materials, the stone from the island of Brač and the Green Adriatic stone. By placing the house in the shape of the letter L, the architect opened pleasant outdoor spaces on all sides of the house, with the possibility to separate or connect the interior to the outdoor space by large bay windows depending on the time of day, sun and wind, this way obtaining a space easily adaptable to weather conditions as to achieve optimal lighting and temperature. The house is anchored in the natural configuration of the plot, with the yard descending to the sea in stone cascades full of Mediterranean plants to the sound of tireless crickets.
The house, built on two floors, has an area of 150 m2. The ground floor has a kitchen and a living room that is open to the outside space on two of its sides, facing the sea and the rocks. Next to the kitchen is a tavern on the site of an old cistern that serves as a cold grocery store. There is also a bathroom on the ground floor. There are two bathrooms and four bedrooms upstairs, one of which has a balcony facing the sea, with an external staircase connected to the terrace which leads to the kitchen on the ground floor. There is a painting studio on the other part of that terrace. Pets are welcome. In front of the house there is a parking space that can accommodate four vehicles.
The house is right by the sea, and a developed beach is a 3-minute walk away. In the village there is an ATM, shop, pastry shop and restaurant, children's park and church with a basilica dating back to VI. century.
Local roads are connecting Povlja with other places on Brač, making day trips to Bol, Vidova gora, Supetar (connected to Split by ferry) or other locations accessible by car or local bus. Brač airport is 23 kilometers away by road.
