Our family of 6 loved the home! It is very secluded and peaceful. There are great views of the mountains on all sides of the home. I would strongly encourage a four wheel drive vehicle to access the home. The high speed internet was fantastic to have to let the family unwind after a busy day of hiking.
My husband and I took our two dogs and had a wonderful time at Sunrise Ridge. This was our 4th stay at this house and it never disappoints. We enjoy the peace and quiet, the privacy, the vast space to explore with our dogs without running into other people, and the star-gazing at night. The kitchen is well equipped and I love the terra-cotta floors. Our favorite spot is the porch which provides ample shade and a spectacular view all day long. Daryl and Janet are also very easy to reach if needed. We are already planning to return next year.
Very quiet and secluded with nobody even close. Spacious with all the necessities for comfort living. Internet was super as there is no other connection with the outside world. Is though a drive to get to Terlingue, 30 miles. Something to consider.
The house was nice. It was as pictured. It could use some updating and repainting. But overall was nicer than the other VRBOs of that size that I found. The stars are absolutely amazing out there. The driveway is no joke, long and bumpy, but was no problem in our Honda Pilot. The drive to the house from Terlingua was longer than expected. Close to 45 minutes.
The house layout works great for couples. We brought our dogs too. Lots of space and the front porch view is amazing. It's waaaay out there and a very rocky slow drive to get to the house. Lotsa privacy and perfect for mountain bike riders. We ran out of the water provided but there is more in the store room. Internet and receiving texts are sketchy but it is about disconnecting. We had a great time. The Terlingua Lodge is close by and they have a restaurant. It was a great stay and Janet and Daryl with Big Bend Vacation Rentals are very responsive. We have stayed in another str they manage.
This place is a true desert gem. It's secluded and serene and has everything needed for a relaxing getaway. We especially loved the big covered porch which stayed cool almost all day. We read under the awning and pulled the chairs out at night to star gaze. Bed was comfortable and the closets were stocked with plenty of hangers. The kitchen is equipped with all the tools and utensils you need to make all your meals. The jack and jill bathroom was also a plus. It was perfect. Best to have a high(ish) clearance vehicle as it is a rocky ride to the front door, but totally worth it. We'll definitely return soon!
Property is well described in VRBO listing.
Amazing customer service from rental manager Daryl. Unexpected 2-3inches of snow came on our checkout day and Daryl called to open the house up for a free night to accommodate from a safety perspective.
Beyond customer service I would recommend this property! We felt sorry for the suckers who stayed in tents by the side on the road while we drove to our beautiful, secluded, well maintained VRBO!
We had a wonderful time overall, a few things to note…
Cons:
- [ ] We were actually pretty disappointed at the cleanliness of the house. The shower walls and shower ground was pretty disgusting, clearly it had not been cleaned. I tried to clean it myself but there were no cleaning supplies at all. Tons of cob webs and dust which led me to believe the house had not been cleaned before we arrived which is disappointing since we paid a cleaning fee.
- [ ] Plan ahead food wise! Very far drive to the nearest store and isn’t in an easy spot to grab food quickly.
- [ ] The last 4 ish miles of the drive is rough and we have an suv. Long, bumpy, rough drive through dirt, rocky roads. You have to go very slow which adds to drive time but again to be expected with the location. I recommend getting there before sunrise/sunset as the drive could be dangerous with no light and you’ll need a good vehicle.
- [ ] Not a huge issue but the listing says ‘central air’ however there are actually 3 mini splits in the ceiling. The biggest draw back was when we arrived the house was 90 plus degrees and it took a long time to bring the temperature down once we turned them on. We stayed in September and it was 90-100 degrees.
- [ ] Bring plenty of drinking water! We had two cases for four days for two adults and a dog.
My husband and I spent 4 nights at this property in mid June. We wanted a quiet, secluded spot with great outdoor space, a complete kitchen and plenty of space. This home did not disappoint. We were thankful we rented an SUV. The roads are rough and I would rather bounce around the alignment on a rental. But still the roads were safe and never were an issue getting around. We made sure to bring in all of our groceries and anything and everything we thought we might need as it is not easy to get to stores. But even then there were so many items in the kitchen that it was very nice at the thoughtful touches. The bookcase with games, books, puzzles was jammed packed with such a variety of great items. I read everything from Walden to a book on card games. The outside front porch we utilized every morning and every night. At the end of the trip we realized we might have been better served using the back screen porch in the morning to change up the view as we found mid-June the screen porch was too stuffy the rest of the day. But the wide, long front porch was a dream and we so enjoyed grilling out each night and eating on the patio while taking in the amazing sights and peaceful sounds. My absolute favorite part was watching the sunset each night and then hanging out in the zero gravity chairs watching the stars come out. We even got a great distant lightening storm two of the nights. The only comments for improvements were that the living room furniture was extremely sparse-just a sofa-not even all of the furniture seem in photos. And the a/c did struggle to keep up with the heat. Not really an issue. We tried to be conscious of our energy and water utilization but this home did not ever get as cool as we would like. Still, We really hated to leave and would love to plan a return trip.

Off to a bad start
We arrive very late at night. The house is so desolate and remote there was no light to be seen anywhere. The house its about 20 miles from the town of terlingua which makes it inconvenient to go into town. The driveway to the house is horrible! It is very rocky and dangerous. As I mentioned, it was very very dark and there were no lights. No one had bothered to turn on the outside light so that we could see something and at least find the house. As a result, I felt and hit the back of my head We decided since I needed medical attention we would stay in town to be close to a medical facility and A more suitable place to stay. The house is lovely and has all the amenities except television which would be very handy. I will be more thorough with my search next time. This cannot happen again. The property owner is very nice and easy to work with. However, she has not offered any compensation for my accident.
Out of the way and very secluded. Took 40 minutes to get to Tx 118 for our daily ride to Terlingua or
Big Bend National Park. Sat outside and marveled at the clear ski full of stars. We had a wonderful trip and the house
Met our needs.
Literally. Surprised to be so far away from town and could've used directions on how to leave the home and get back on main road and to BBNP... i.e., like thorough instructions TO the home. The kitchen was large and accommodating. Need at least one electrical plug on kitchen island. No TV or radio :(
Sand piled up on door mat, needs to be blown off to do its job... we were jumping over the mat as it was tracking into the house. Lots of spider webs inside the home. Floors were dirty in bathroom. Extremely low water pressure in shower. Wheel on grill was broken upon arrival but we made it work. This home is WAY out there and extremely quiet. Beautiful mountains surround the home.
We really enjoyed our stay. The house is perfect and well provided for to meet all our needs. Once you get to the house it's a great place, however the road to get there is a bit bumpy and long. We were thankful that we rented a car and didn't take our personal vehicles down that road.
This is our second year at Sunrise Ridge and the stay did not disappoint. From the well-equipped, spotless kitchen to comfortable beds, spacious living room and stunning outdoor spaces both front and back, we had a truly relaxing experience. Daryl, the manager, was very responsive to a couple of issues, no propane and, horrors, no hair dryer, delivering both post haste, even bringing a brand new hair dryer in the box. Thank you, Daryl!
Sunrise Ridge was a welcome respite after going to the park which was extremely crowded and noisy. Desert solitude awaited our return and we did not want to leave after a week’s long visit. As Edward Abbey said, “What draws us into the desert is the search for something intimate in the remote.” Sunrise Ridge is all that and more.
We enjoyed the property and were not disappointed in the seclusion for which we had hoped. The directions to the property were needed, but were clear and spot on. The drive to the property was harder for those of us without 4 wheel drive vehicles but could be done. We were able to locate everything we needed at the home. We expected a long drive to Big Bend but considering our wish for a secluded place we were pleased that the drive was quicker than expected.
I was looking forward to staying at this rental before we even got there. But the actual experience far exceeded our expectations. It is so peaceful and quiet. I could have sat on the front porch and enjoyed the view all day. The stars are incredible at night. We enjoyed the beautiful kitchen for the Thanksgiving holiday. We really appreciated that it was pet friendly. WiFi was fantastic! Definitely recommend a high clearance vehicle to drive to this house. The drive to get to the house may take a while but it makes for a really remote cabin that is so quiet and peaceful. It heals the sole. Will definitely stay here again.
This is our second time to stay at Sunrise Ridge and we enjoyed the solitude and quiet. The house is very comfortable and the windows bring in lots of natural light and beautiful vistas. The front porch provides escape from the sun while still providing a breathtaking view. The back porch is wonderful for outdoor dining. It's definitely worth the drive. We will be back!
