June 6, 2019: 75th anniversary of D-day in Normandy
Photo: La Cambe German War Cemetery. 21,222 German soldiers are buried here. It is a very different place to the American and Commonwealth cemeteries. The crosses here are made from grey schist and do not mark individuals graves. Instead, burial locations are marked by plaques on the ground.

The German cemetery of World War 2. A very primitive, beautifully arranged cemetery.
The remains of over 21,000 German solders killed during the first few months of the Allied invasion are interred here, many of them moved from other ad hoc burial sites across France. The entrance sign reads, in part: "With its melancholy rigour, it is a graveyard for soldiers not all of whom had chosen either the cause or the fight".
