Nestled on the edge of the fertile plain along the lower course of the Coghinas River, Viddalba is a hub of the Gallura language and traditions, on the western border of Gallura with Anglona, just south of Badesi and a few minutes from the stunning beaches of the Gulf of Asinara—an ideal setting for sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing enthusiasts. According to folk tales, the hamlets surrounding the main town—which was founded in the Middle Ages—were the scene of the raids carried out by the “Muto di Gallura,” a deaf-mute outlaw from the late 19th century who left his mark on local history. Originally, the town’s main source of income was livestock farming; today, it is tourism, agriculture—particularly the cultivation of watermelons, potatoes, tomatoes, and especially “spiny” artichokes—and crafts, especially textile work, wrought iron, and stonework.
Hiking and horseback riding enthusiasts will explore, amid Mediterranean scents, charming rural paths through the sheepfolds and across the hills that border the territory to the east. The trails lead to the summit of Monti Ruiu, passing through deep red rocks, and to Mount San Gavino, where twenty “bolted routes” serve as a training ground for paragliding and rock climbing enthusiasts. At the summit (800 meters) stands the Church of San Gavino a Monte, where a folkloric festival in honor of the saint takes place on May 1. The Viddalba section of the Coghinas River flows through pine and eucalyptus forests, teeming with eels, carp, sea bass, and tench, and inhabited by herons, coots, and moorhens. It is a popular spot for sport fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching. Just a few minutes from the town, on one bank of the river, lie the Casteldoria thermal baths: their salt-bromine-iodine waters, known for their healing properties and used as far back as Roman times by the Doria and Aragonese families, flow at a temperature of over 70 degrees. The river continues downstream, winding through the bends of Mount San Giovanni, where you’ll find a park, scenic viewing platforms, and the Romanesque church of St. John the Evangelist, dating back to the 12th century and later completely rebuilt. The statue of the saint is housed in the church of St. Leonard. Festivals and fairs are accompanied by traditional music and costumes, offering an opportunity to sample Gallurese soup, meats, cheeses, and wines. Among the festivals, the Gallurese Wedding stands out, featuring poetry contests, horse parades, songs, and dances.
The Viddalba plain has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the domus de Janas, and was continuously inhabited from the Early Bronze Age (18th century B.C.). Near the sanctuary of San Leonardo, you’ll see the ruins of a Nuragic village, upon which the vast necropolis of San Leonardo was built between the late 3rd and 4th centuries A.D. Precious grave goods and dozens of decorated funerary stelae have been unearthed from this site; these stelae served as markers for cremation tombs and are now housed in the municipal archaeological museum, one of the province of Sassari’s major exhibitions. It is dedicated to artifacts from the entire lower Coghinas Valley: from Neolithic and Eneolithic pottery and stone tools to Punic, Roman, and Renaissance coins.
The sea is just a few minutes away, along with wellness and sports activities, nature and archaeology, tradition and good food: Viddalba has everything you need for a magnificent vacation!
