Travel Guide

A lakeside scene with boats, a flag, and a crowd of people.
A beach with turquoise waters and a sandy shore.
A sunny outdoor market with various stalls selling plants and gardening supplies.
A person surfing on a wave, another person paddling on a surfboard, and a rescue boat in the background.
A beach with waves, a lighthouse, and a distant hill.

Whether you’re admiring the hinterland backdrop from a riverside trail or swimming in gentle breakwaters, adventure is just around the corner in this idyllic region.

Experience the North Coast’s full spectrum of magnificent scenery in Brunswick Heads. This coastal village has rainforest-fringed hillsides, hinterland splendour, crystal-clear river waters, sheltered beaches and barreling surf breaks. Set out on a kayaking adventure down the tree-lined river or begin a fishing charter from the marina. Dive or snorkel in the protected waters, scan the horizon for whales or have some quiet meditation in a perfect spot in the nature reserve.

Start your visit at Brunswick Heads Boat Harbour. From here, embark on a sightseeing tour or a wildlife-watching charter. You might see dolphins or migrating whales in the cooler months. Sign up for a snorkeling or diving tour around the nearby Cape Byron Marine Park and discover the underwater world beyond the shoreline.

Join a cruise or a kayaking trip along the Brunswick River. Peer into the rainforest canopy to spot birds or watch turtles swimming below your watercraft. Check the surf at the beaches neighboring the small village or relax at tranquil Torakina Beach located inside the breakwater.

For activities on dry land, be sure to check out the Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve, which has a range of hiking and cycling trails, as well as pretty picnic spots.

Stroll down the town’s main street for a meal at a casual café serving fresh seafood and dishes using local produce. Join locals at one of the annual events, such as the Old and Gold Festival and second-hand market or the family-friendly Kites and Bikes Festival. Visit Memorial Park on the first Saturday of the month to experience the Brunswick Markets.

Brunswick Heads is easily accessible via Ballina Byron Gateway Airport, which is a 30-minute drive away. The town is a pleasant daytrip destination from Byron Bay, about 11 miles (17 kilometres) away. Tropical Brunswick Heads is a great place to visit at any time of year. Visit in spring and fall for the best chance of spotting whales.
