"I booked a superior room for 2 nights with my wife. We arrived about 2.30pm and the room wasn’t ready. There was some confusion from the front desk about our later dinner reservation, the receptionist stated I didn’t have a booking and despite my assertions she didn’t really seem to believe that I had booked it months ago. She said it wasn’t recorded. She only relented when I showed her their messages to me confirming the booking. Anyway, awaiting the room we went to the bar. The staff in the bar were lovely and it was well priced for a hotel, the actual bar was a little cold. When we got into the room, I can’t say it was ‘superior’. It was a little small, cold and not well lit. There was no safe nor minibar/fridge something I would have expected for £162 per night. When I raised this at reception it wasn’t well received, the lady was polite and they did put in a room heater. Evening meal was lovely and again the staff in the bar, where we ate, were lovely and provided a great service. Breakfast on the first morning was a buffet affair and in the main was well cooked. On the second morning breakfast wasn’t as good, my wife had Eggs Benedict but the poached eggs were hard (as were mine) and the Hollandaise sauce was split, we never got the requested toast- poor show chef! The actual grounds at the hotel were beautiful and lovely to walk around the lake and close by canal. Altogether it was a nice stay but not as good as I’d expected. "

"The main building is really impressive and full of character. Gym facilities are excellent, and pool/sauna/steam room a treat. We didn’t eat at the hotel in the evening but the breakfast was great. Room was pleasingly spacious."

"Small but comfortable and clean room. As it is historic and old building atmoaphere was incredible, but it wont have the new big windows in the room etc. But beautiful, comfortable stay"

"We had a nice stay at the Lion & Swan until the last morning when we came down for breakfast and there was only 1 staff member dealing in taking order, it took over an hour for her just to take our order for coffee/tea, so we give up on ordering breakfast and left the restaurant, it was not the staff member taking orders was not at fault but extremely bad management on not covering enough staff for the weekend wwith the hotel fully booked and 2 weddings being held over the weekend. The manager who was on duty did not help or even acknowledge the people in the restaurant who was waiting so long for their breakfast without even a apology. The manager should be retrained or dismissed due to the lack of professional service provided. Our room was good but the hotel needs to find a better way to open the velux window and blind rather than a pole which is very dangerous, all so the noise with people taking when coming out of the function room into the car park waiting for taxis"
