Korea’s ancient past and hyper-modern sensibilities come together in a somewhat underrated neighbourhood that has a little bit of everything.

Despite being right in the centre of Busan, Yeonje-Gu is a mystery to most tourists. With busy main roads and small side streets lined with pastel-colored houses, it seems, to the untrained eye, much like any other part of the city. Search for the hidden pleasures of the district and reward yourself with a night out at the Korean barbecue restaurants and karaoke bars that make this a favourite dining area for locals. Taste all the multifaceted aspects of modern Korean society in one neighbourhood.

Travel out from the city centre and emerge in the bustling streets, lined with shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Head south to Busan City Hall and the constant activity around it. North, stroll along the peaceful Oncheoncheon Stream, which has space for exercise and peaceful walks to appreciate the cherry blossoms that bloom every spring.

Head to the mountains for some of Yeonsan’s best attractions. In the north, hike up Baesan Mountain’s verdant hillsides to find the Yeonsandong Ancient Tombs, relics of Korea’s Three Kingdoms period in the 400s and 500s.

Head south to Myeongdong Mountain, which has several Buddhist temples along its foothills. Stop by the most famous, Hyewonjeongsa Temple, a site of spiritual serenity with stunning art and statuary.

Yeonje-Gu is located northeast of Busan city centre. Take the subway to Yeonsan, one of the area’s main stations, from Busan central station in 30 minutes, or from the city centre in 10 minutes. Reach the neighbourhood in 50 minutes from Gimhae International Airport. Bus connections and several other train lines connect different parts of the neighbourhood to each other. When exploring the temples and other attractions in the mountains, taxis may be the easiest way to get around.
