  • Joseph Winthrop Holley, born in 1874 to former slaves in Winnsboro, South Carolina, founded the institution in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution. In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia and in 1943 it was granted four-year status and renamed Albany State College. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program, a prelude to the school being upgraded to university status in 1996.

We had a quick weekend get away in the incredible house with our family of 12 adults and 4 kids, ages 1-78! The large bedrooms provided plenty of room for each family. The gorgeous kitchen is huge with ample counter space, lots of dishes, cups, and utensils. There’s a Keurig and a regular coffee pot. There’s a large stock pot but you may want to bring a large frying pan and cutting board if you need one. Downstairs is a massive empty garage that opens up to the backyard. There’s a half bath accessible downstairs as well- very handy! We LOVED the backyard and had a blast with the fire pit. The partially covered dock has two boat slips. There’s a good amount of stairs in the front so bringing things in is a beast, but it is so worth it! This is a great spot with a WONDERFUL property manager- Debbie. We will be back!

We rented this house for a night to accommodate guests for my daughter's wedding on 11/8/25. It is GORGEOUS! Right on Lake Blackshear, with beautiful views of the lake from many rooms in the house. Very spacious- there were 10 guests total, but definitely room for more. Debbie was extremely gracious and very quick to answer any questions I had. If you're going to spend time in the Cordele/Warwick/Lake Blackshear area, this is the place to be!! My daughter, her husband and guests were so pleased with this rental. We will definitely be booking again in the future!

Excellent house

Very nice and clean. Six well appointed bedrooms. Living area and kitchen well stocked with all you need. We cooked everyday! Porches and views are beautiful. Would definitely stay there again.

Our stay at “Boots And Suits Lakehouse getaway” In Cordele, Georgia, was nothing short of remarkable! This exquisite property comfortably accommodated our entire family as we gathered for our son's wedding. The home boasts six beautiful bedrooms, complete with comfortable bedding, ample storage space, and TVs in all but one room, making every guest feel right at home.The upstairs features three bedrooms and one bathroom, while the downstairs offers three bedrooms, and two bathrooms. Each bathroom was fully stocked with amenities reminiscent of a hotel experience.The heart of the home is the expansive great room, featuring a spacious living area, a formal dining space, and a fully equipped kitchen. The property owners have thoughtfully provided everything needed for a comfortable stay, from a variety of cookware, appliances, and utensils, to a Keurig and traditional coffee pot.What truly sets this retreat apart is the breathtaking view of Lake Blackshear, which can be admired from the large deck off the main living area.The home's property manager, Debbie, was a delight to work with, always responsive to our needs and ensuring we had an exceptional stay.If you're searching for a "home away from home" experience with all the comforts and amenities, look no further than “Boots And Suits Lakehouse getaway”.
