• It's likely you've heard about DVT (deep vein thrombosis), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. There's lots you can do to minimize your risk. Wear a good-quality pair of compression socks or tights, stay well hydrated and move your legs and feet. Walk around the cabin when possible or perform exercises in your seat.

• Keep your travel documents and passport within close reach. They're the first things you'll be asked to present to airport security.
• Next up is the X-ray machine. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to beep. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• All electronic gadgets, including your laptop and phone, must also be scanned separately.
• Any liquids or gels, such as shampoo or hand cream, that you want to take on board must be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
• There's a good chance you'll be asked to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a wise idea.
