• Flying can be a pleasure if you bring the right stuff. First things first, you'll need basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and some deodorant, a fresh set of clothes and something to read. Next, find room in your hand luggage for your phone and charger, your important medications and perhaps a comfy neck pillow too. Lastly, remember to bring your passport, travel papers and some cash.

• Double-check that you don't have sharp or pointed objects lurking in your carry-on luggage. Other banned items include explosive or flammable products, such as aerosol cans and fuel, and gels and liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

• Your main aim is to feel as comfortable as you can. Choose shoes that are easy to slip on and off, dress in loose, natural fibers and don't forget to bring a pullover in case you get cold in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can pose a risk on long-distance flights. It results from blood clots forming due to poor circulation and inactivity, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks or tights.

The trick is to be well prepared before you arrive at the airport security gate. That way, you'll be stepping onto that plane to Dover in no time at all. Follow these helpful tips and get your trip off to a flying start:

• Security personnel first need to know that you have a valid passport and travel documents before anything else. Keep them within easy reach.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your jacket, belt, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your headphones, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn.
• Your electronic devices like phones and laptops will also have to go through the machine to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Remove gels and liquids from your carry-on luggage. They often need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each product should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• There's a good chance you'll need to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them safely away in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board.
