Wherever you're coming from, flying can be a pleasurable experience if you're well prepared. We've put together a list of handy hints that will get your Ob holiday started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• The secret to having an awesome flight experience is to pack in advance. Start with the essentials: passport, official ID, cash and important medications. Next, bring items that'll help keep you occupied, like your laptop or a juicy novel. It's also smart to pack your chargers, a neck pillow and a pair of earphones. Finally, don't forget to chuck in toiletries like a toothbrush, facial wipes and a fresh change of clothes.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated by security. Pointed or sharp objects, like your pocket knife, and dangerous goods which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosol cans, flares and poisons, are also prohibited.

What to wear on a flight:

• For just a few moments, you'll need to unplug from technology. Your phone, laptop and any other electronic devices will need to go through the scanner.
• Remove all liquids and gels from your hand luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each product should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you several precious minutes. Hiking boots are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Lightweight sneakers are usually not.
• Sharp items such as knives and scissors can't be taken on board. They'll be confiscated at security, so pack them in your checked baggage.
