• A plane trip can be a pleasure if you bring the right things. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and lip balm, a fresh change of clothes and a good read. Next, find a spot in your bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, any daily medications and maybe a comfy neck pillow as well. Last, but definitely not least, be sure to take your passport, travel papers and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Make sure you don't have sharp objects (like a pocket knife) hiding in the bottom of your hand luggage. Other restricted items include flammable or explosive goods, such as fuel and matches, and gels and liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your main priority when deciding what to wear on board. Loose, breathable clothing is a smart choice, as are flat, slip-on shoes.
• Most travellers are aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To lower your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression socks and keep your feet and legs moving.

It's all about being organised. We've put together some tips and tricks for a hassle-free trip through airport security. Look out Sheldon, here you come:

• Be sure to keep your ID and travel documents close by. They're the first things you'll be asked for by airport security.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your belt, coat, keys and other contents of your pockets, like coins, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them as it gets closer to your turn.
• All your electronic gadgets, including your phone and laptop, will also need to be scanned.
• Travelling with a new cologne or perfume? As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a zip-close bag, you're allowed to bring it with you in your carry-on.
• Slip-on shoes are a good footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when passing through security. Boots and heavier-style shoes are usually subjected to additional screening.
• Knives and other sharp items are not allowed on board. They'll be confiscated at security, so put them in your checked suitcase.
