More sleepy fishing village than buzzing night spot, Kamala Beach is characterised by its relaxed atmosphere and long stretches of empty sands surrounding by lush green hills.
The ocean is completely calm between November and April, with the occasional swell from May to October. The enclosed bay of Kamala beach offers safe swimming all year round and because there are fewer activities to be found here than at some of the busier beaches, it’s the ideal location for families with small children. The kids can frolic in the sea without the risk of running into a surfboard and you can relax and enjoy the sun. If you’d like to see some of the life beneath the ocean, head to the north end of the beach for snorkelling from November to April.
This place is all about relaxation. Hire a sun lounger from the south end of the beach nearer the centre of town, or throw down a towel anywhere you like. You’ll have the beach pretty much to yourself! The beach doesn’t have any public toilets, but facilities are available at the hotels dotted along the beachfront—just ask. These are also the places to go for a sit-down lunch. If you don’t want to leave the sand, try one of the street stalls selling traditional Thai dishes such as salads, curries and chicken satay.
Just a few streets back from the glistening waters, you’ll find the main part of Kamala town. Its roads are lined with plenty of shops and stalls. There’s also a village market on Friday nights that sells fresh produce, as well as clothes, DVDs and handicrafts. Locals flock to a twice-weekly market on Kamala Main Road. Do as the locals do and head there to sample delicious fresh Thai food and soak up the ambience.
As night falls, don’t miss the Phuket Fantasea, a huge Vegas-style spectacular. This theme park boasts a carnival atmosphere and features hundreds of performers in elaborate traditional costumes, including trapeze artists and performing elephants. There’s also shopping and dining available.
Kamala Beach is on the west coast of Phuket Island it is eight kilometres to the north of Patong Beach, about half an hour from the International Airport.
