"The rooms are a bit dated, BUT the buffet dinner was fantastic and we LOVED the beautiful onsens. They were by far the highlight of our stay, and I would absolutely come again and again for that alone."

"Apparently the hotel had suffered flooding as a result of some extremely adverse weather but I would never have known if I hadn't spotted a sign as we were leaving. We wanted to spend some time in Narai-juku and found this hotel as a stay over before returning to Osaka the next day. We weren't sure what to expect but our short stay wound up being one of the highlights of our entire fortnight in Japan. The room was perfect, the evening meal was absolutely incredible, the staff were some of the nicest people I have ever met (a special mention for the young man on the front desk who went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect for us) and all in all, myself and my wife had a wonderful time and have some lovely memories of our stay. If you want a stay in a traditional inn, this one comes highly recommended."

"Our experience with this hotel was overall good! Staff was kind and friendly, facilities were a little dated and the lighting inside the room needs updating, pure white light is not the most pleasant, however the traditional Japanese bedroom experience was very cool! Breakfast was also awesome! That alone made this experience super cool!"

Okuhida Hot Spring Hirayukan

Okuhida Hot Spring Hirayukan

10/10 Excellent
"Okuhida Hot Spring Hirayukan is conveniently located, just a short and easy walk from the Hirayu Onsen bus terminal. A small shop beside the ryokan sells snacks and drinks, which is useful especially in the quieter evenings. Check in was smooth and the ryokan already had our Expedia reservations. As with most Japanese ryokan, copies of our passports were taken. We stayed in the Japanese Style Room, Sengakuso, Non Smoking (35 sqm). Footwear must be removed at the main lobby and changed to the in house slippers, in line with traditional ryokan customs. Our room was located some distance away from the main lobby and required climbing two flights of stairs, with no lift access. There were no shower facilities in the room, which is typical for many traditional ryokan. The onsen baths are located in the main building, and the male and female bathing areas are rotated once a day. Buffet dinner offered at Y4400 per person from 6pm. It was enjoyable and good value, with a wide selection including seafood. Each table is provided with two fuel stoves, and guests can choose between grilling, hotplate, or hotpot to cook the raw food. A nice touch is the free ramen served at the main lobby from 10pm to 10.30pm, perfect for a light supper after a soak in the onsen."

"The staff were very accommodating and friendly. They offered us another room for our second night after we realized we booked a room without a private toilet. The meals were some of the best we had in Japan with wonderfully varied menu using high quality ingredients. It is tucked away from Kiso Fukushima town so you need to take a taxi (approx Y4,000) or other transportation. It was nice to experience a quieter ryokan in the country."
