Epic coastline hike at La Perouse Bay. #culture
You could be merely snapping shots for your Instragram, you could be a photojournalist for National Geographic, or you could just be out having a great time and feel compelled to capture it. No matter where you stand, La Perouse Bay is, photographer or not, any nature-lover’s Shangri-La. Traditionally called Keone‘o‘io, this unusual site presents the end-results of Haleakala’s most recent eruption in 1790: fields of barren a’a, imposing grottos and coves, a string of cinder cones, empty beaches covered in alabaster sand, and copses of kiawe—a striking mesquite tree that photographs brilliantly. Located on Maui’s southernmost tip, La Perouse Bay is also home to pods of spinner dolphins (at select times of year) and part of King’s Highway—an ancient footpath that served as the first route to circumvent the whole island. Sunsets are particularly magnificent from the “Forbidden Coast,” given its seemingly up-close-and-personal views of Molokini and Kaho’olawe. While long hikes, short walks, and any-which-way swims are terrific ways to see and snap La Perouse, viewing it aboard a boat will render your photographs all the more dramatic. One to try: Redline Rafting, a wildly fun outfit, run out of Kihei, that takes passengers to the region’s best points of interest. https://redlinerafting.com/maui-forbidden-coast/
