I generally love the old-fashioned side of the Dow, and my room was comfortable and clean, but the fact that the shower runs from cold to scalding off and on as you shower is disqualifying. Also, I needed to briefly use a plug-in hair tool to get ready, and there was not a plug anywhere near a mirror.

The Historic Hotel should be torn down..Buyer beware !! No air conditioning, only a small vent by the ceiling that I was told was a Swamp Cooler. Coming out of the vent was Hot Air. The room had to be 85 degrees. I found a bed bug in the sheets, one electrical outlet, dirty carpet, holes in the walls. HORRIBLE.

Make sure you know what you're booking: the Economy rooms in the old Villa do not have bathrooms or showers en suite. (I did know that.) If you're looking for a cowboy-culture rustic vibe and a cheap place to stay, Dow Villa fits the bill--there's John Wayne (and other cowboy film) memorabilia all over. There are no mini-fridges, microwaves or coffeemakers in the rooms, but there is decent coffee available from very early morning in the lobby. Wifi is good, AC maybe less so. But the place is over 100 years old. The exterior is picturesque and the lobby, which is stocked with games, books, a computer and comfy furniture is charming. Pool and hot tub are nice. Location is central to Lone Pine, which is pretty small and outside of its Whitney Portal status, doesn't have much going on.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The lobby is lovely, with all the actors’ pictures from Western movies, the room and bed were very comfortable, and the temperature in the room was perfect. I stayed before a hiking trip, which happened to take place at the same time as Badwater Ultramarathon, and there was a very exciting and enjoyable vibe at the hotel and in town. I will come back.

We stayed in one of the newer rooms because we have a dog, but the communication between expedia and the hotel was POOR and 2 of our rooms were completely wrong. I had even called the hotel directly a couple of weeks in advance to go over all the rooms, and the gentleman I spoke with couldn’t even see that I had a reservation for my dates. After many minutes on the phone and me telling him I booked through expedia, he then saw my reservation. I confirmed that ai had requested 1 queen and 1 double queen in the historic side of the hotel, BOTH with full amenities (bathrooms inside the rooms, some of their rooms don’t have bathrooms), and he confirmed all of that on the phone! When my party of 5 went to check in, 2 of our rooms didn’t have bathrooms, and BOTH rooms in the historic side were SINGLE queen, not at all what I had confirmed over the phone!! After coming down from just climbing Mount Whitney and being off the grid for 4 days, we were all so tired and in no mood to be told the rooms were NOT what was verbally confirmed by phone. Things happen, but the man doubled down that he had never talked to me, YET had confirmed that he indeed changed 1 room for the dog. In the end, a female colleague stepped in and made everything happen correctly and got all our rooms situated correctly.

When I'd booked an economy room, I should have read the small print. The bathroom was down the hall and the shower upstairs... I'd have booke elsehere if I had realized this. The worst aspect of the stay was that the inadequate communal air conditioning (no heat/cooling controls in room), kept my room at a sweltering muggy 76 degrees all night. The desk ffered me a fan. Because the television wasn't funcyioning, I was switched to another room where I was afraid to plug in the fan to the outlet that had detached from the wall and was hanging by the wires... When I got back from my ascent of Mt Whitneyy, I booked the Mt Whitneyy motel. Wonderful air conditioning and a great bed. Finally got some sleep.

The property was very historic and neat. It was clean and had a nice pool area. We ended up not staying because I did not read the fine print and understand that our room did not have a private bathroom nor did it have air conditioning. It was a very warm day and we came in off a long road trip and was looking forward to a cool room. The staff was amazing and the clerk who assisted us with canceling was wonderful.

A real gem. A Piece of western history. I love staying here. I stayed in the older part of the hotel. The room was small, but very quaint and comfortable. I watched westerns on the tv. I slept well. The room was very clean.
