The cottage I stayed in needs some TLC. There were smudge marks around one of the doors, a loose switch plate in the bathroom, and a noisy fridge. The bathroom towels were gray in color, giving them a dirty look, the bottom sheet on the bed wasn't tucked in, and the pillowcases were too big for the pillows. The complimentary yogurt parfait for breakfast was fresh and delicious, but the pastry offerings are limited and tasteless. The hotel location is excellent, a stone's throw from the coastal path and downtown Pacific Grove. It's still a good overall choice, but it could stand some freshening up.

Staff was truly wonderful, and made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in! The hotel itself was charmingly antique, and the breakfast was limited but delicious (definitely ask for the yoghurt parfait!). Overall, a fantastic stay.

When we checked in, the suite in the attic was 81 degrees Fahrenheit with no AC. When we went to the front desk to let them know, they told us there was nothing they could do. We asked if we could buy a portable AC or fans and be reimbursed and they said no. We asked if they could send someone to buy something of that kind and they said no. They gave us a broken fan, then when we informed them that it was broken, they could only provide a different one because another smaller room was empty in the house. We inquired about a partial refund since the room was not up to standard and were told no as well. We talked to Expedia about the issue, and they told us the only way to get a refund was to cancel the remainder of the reservation. We told Expedia that we would finish the reservation. However, the next morning the hotel told us that they had checked us out at Expedia’s request. Expedia told us they made no such request to the hotel. The hotel told us we could not just rebook the room because it was sold out. After two hours on the phone with Expedia and conversations with the front desk, we were leaving with nowhere to sleep and they then informed us that the room was available and we could stay. So they had told us it was sold out because our reservation was still on the room, though we had allegedly been checked out and refunded already. Even if the fault of Expedia, all could have been avoided if the hotel just addressed the room temperature and cared at all about guests.

I love the cozy charming feel of this Historic Landmark Hotel. Staff was friendly and kind. I felt comfortable and secure as a Solo Traveler. Parking is limited on the site, but the neighborhood streets around the hotel off her parking. You can unload in front of the hotel, and then go find a place to park. The breakfast of a yogurt parfait made to order and various pastries was very good. It is close to shopping and dining, and a walk to the beach is just several blocks away.

The building itself is beautiful and historic, and the architecture gives the property a lot of charm. Unfortunately, the actual condition of the hotel does not live up to the “boutique hotel” experience they advertise. The room showed several issues related to maintenance and cleanliness, including worn carpet, dust accumulation around the windows, peeling wallpaper, stains on the bedding, and damaged fixtures. These details made the room feel poorly maintained. Another disappointment was the breakfast. It was advertised as a continental breakfast, but it consisted mainly of yogurt and pre-packaged pastries that were simply warmed up. In addition, we were sold one room category but were given a different one. Because of these issues, we decided to check out early. To their credit, the staff refunded the night we did not stay, which we appreciated. With better maintenance and attention to cleanliness, this property could truly live up to its historic charm.
