Poponi - Paradise beach

Memories Have Been Made!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Not only was our trip AMAZING, the Poponi House and Beach was the icing on the cake! All the amenities were there to make our stay comfortable. Beautiful cottage style home, large areas to walk around and the small touches around the property (hammocks, etc) were perfect. We had 6 people in our party so we also rented the guest house above the garage. There was more than enough space for all of us. Only a few things to note, a large coffee maker would be nice (we had to bring the one down from the guest cottage to have 2 small ones to accomadate 6 ppl) and we would loved to have enjoyed the palapa down by the beach more, but with the large hedges right in front, it blocks the view of the beautiful ocean. The beach was very private and walking distance in either way to a restaurants/bar. Loved that we could snorkel directly off our beach. Waking up to the sunrises were incredible even from our bed. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

The Consummate Beach Getaway

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The home is beautiful - a mix of coastal furnishings and eclectic decor. A few highlights - the house is very spacious - we were able to use 1 dining room table to play board games and use the other 2nd dining room table to eat. The beach is very, very private and there is a plethora of beach chairs, lounge chairs, hammocks. And, there are plenty of seating areas on the very large screened in-porch. The major downside is no washer/dryer in the rental. We were very, very, very surprised because we had not brought enough clothes for 7 days. We had assumed we could do a load mid-stay of clothes. I wish that had been pointed out earlier so we could have planned better.Along the beach, there is some washed up plastics so each morning, we took a grocery bag or two and filled it up - someone said that it is from Africa because there is no other land mass in between. It doesn't detract from the beach but it felt good to scoop up plastic that is on the Atlantic. Overall, we had a great week at a very private and secluded home that was steps away from a very beautiful beach.

House and grounds were lovely

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Poponi itself was absolutely lovely. Very clean, spacious, lovely grounds, and we enjoyed sitting on the screened in porch each morning while we made plans for the day. We enjoyed relaxing after a day of sightseeing and beachcombing in the living room, family room, and even made dinner one night with the fresh produce we got from a local farmer.If you are considering renting this home, there are a few "beware" items to consider. On the first day we arrived after being at our local airport at 3am, rushing through the Miami airport to catch our connection, waiting in the heat at our arrival at the north Eleuthera airport, loading our bags, navigating the rough and narrow roads for more than an hour, and finally finding the right (very rough) road to turn on to get to Poponi, we wanted to cool down and put our feet up for a bit. Missy quickly came down and told us that we should try to not use the A/C because energy is VERY expensive in Eleuthera. And it was "IN THE CONTRACT" that she could charge us even more if we used it. We let her know we were tired and hot and were not planning to leave it on or go away from the house without turning it off. Her response to us being hot was "well...you ARE in the Bahamas". Also, only one of the bedrooms had an A/C unit.Another "beware" is about toilet paper and drinking water. Poponi has two bathrooms, but you are allotted ONE ROLL of toilet paper per bathroom per week. When we asked if we could get another roll, she told us that we "RENTED THE HOUSE ONLY AND IT IS IN THE CONTRACT" and we would need to go to the store to purchase additional rolls of TP. We bought a four pack ($4). Also, we were allotted one five-gallon jug of drinking water for four people for a one week stay. Again, we asked about getting another one and were referred to the grocery store to purchase one ($6) because it was "IN THE CONTRACT". She did, however, come down to give restaurant and beach suggestions.

Our problems were with the owners who live on the property and continually gave us the feeling of being watched. (The entrance has a surveillance camera.) On Christmas Eve, they informed us that we were in violation of our rental agreement because we had another family over to dinner. It was only a dinner, not a party or an overnight stay. We are experienced as both landlords and renters in many situations and never had such tense interactions over so little. Elsewhere on the island, we experienced great hospitality, but not at Poponi House. It was a shame to spend so much money and not feel welcome.

Great House on an Amazing Beach

We loved the location and the proximity to grocery stores as well as a few restaurants. The property is well maintained and clean with several places to lounge, including two hammocks down by the incredible beach. Rick and Missy were wonderful hosts. They checked in just enough to make sure things were perfect during our stay.

A little slice of heaven

I warn anyone coming to Eleuthera for the first time to temper their ambitions because the first time you see this property you aren’t going to want to leave. During our stay, the water was beautiful and the beach was empty. The house is gorgeous and well stocked. Just grab the chairs provided, fill the cooler provided, and head down to the beach for the entire stay. Some advice: if you walk to La Bougainvillea, walk near low tide. The sand can be hard to walk on otherwise. Absolutely walk down there for pizza on Thursday. The lobster garlic pizza is amazing. This place is heaven.

Almost a good time

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This is our second visit to Poponi House, the first being prior to covid. What a difference two years can make! While we loved the location, the house itself had deteriorated over the time. It's just tired looking on the inside. Worn rugs and kind of funky smelling. We spent most of our time at Ten Bays beach, on the caribbean side. Much calmer and less wind. Makes ocean front a negative for Poponi. I will return to Eleuthera, but I'll stay elsewhere on the island.

Privacy of Poponi

Loved the screened in porch especially at dusk when the mosquitoes and sand flies would come out. The property was well manicured and maintained with beautiful landscaping with lots of trees and flowers. Checking into the house was easy. The owner of the property lives just across the hedges so he was always around if you needed anything but wasn’t hanging around the property bothering you. However I wasn’t sure what to do when I checked out. There was no directions on that. The only problem I had with the house was that there was no washer and dryer. That was my fault for not checking on the amenities of the house. I just assumed that with a house like this that caters to families, there would be a washer and dryer. On the whole, we loved the house. It was as if we had our own private beach. It was in da heart of town so everything was close by. There was a restaurant on your left and on your right of the house. Both walking distance via beach. You had the privacy of the house but you also felt save in isolation.

Decorated in quaint, bohemian style, just steps to a beautiful beach. We liked these things about it. Beware....the mosquitoes are a HUGE nuisance...inside and out! Thought the house should provide more essentials,,,,like water( they provide 1 large bottle which lasts just 2 days at most), toilet paper, more towels, coffee filters that fit the coffee pot provided.

Awesome Vacation - Perfect Location!

A little slice of heaven!

Reviewer Comments: We are currently building a home in North Palmetto Point and stay at various rentals when we travel to Eleuthera to check on our building progress. Without hesitation I'd say this was our VERY BEST experience. We loved the location, beach, grounds and the overall charm this property exuded! The courtyard directly off the kitchen/dining room area was our favorite location. It was surrounded by beautiful tropical plants and the pergola looming overhead was blanketed with gorgeous bougainvillea. The hummingbirds and warblers were abundant. The bedrooms were located on the ocean side which allowed for a very restful and dreamy sleep! This quaint cottage-like home was appointed nicely and allowed quest numerous locations for privacy, i.e., two living rooms, two dining area, huge screened in porch. Although a bit dated, the kitchen was very clean and functional - everything was in good working order! The beach is one of the best in Eleuthera and especially directly in front of the property. There is a nice amount of shade due to the very mature trees so if you needed to escape the sun it was easy to do. The walk to the beach was extremely easy as the lot provides a gradual slope that was very easy to navigate. There were no steep steps to climb in order to reach the property from the beach -- seemed like the PERFECT location! We LOVED our stay and are anxious to re-book! The only negative that we could think of was the condition of the bedroom pillows -- I think it is time to invest in some new pillows that feel and smell good! Jim King and Peter Jorgenson

Reviewer Comments: The property is large and well equipped, specially the kitchen (that for me is important), There are ample spaces outside in the garden and a very useful screened porch (keep the no-see-hum away). Beautiful beach a few steps from the house. A very minor comment is that at the corner with the property there is the public beach access, so the beach is not always for yourself, but it's nice to see groups of young locals having fun at the beach. The caretaker was available and helped us with some small issues due to heavy rain. I would highly recommend this property.

An Amazing Place to Disconnect!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Poponi House provides the quintessential setting for a true Bahamanian get-away. It provides everything you need to be comfortable while still allowing you to truly disconnect from your daily life (if you want - there is internet/tv if you don't). The property is an oasis on a stunning empty beach. The photos do not do it justice. Both bedrooms are large and comfortable and face the ocean so all guests fall asleep to the sound of the waves. There is an enormous L-shaped screen porch with multiple daybeds and tables for mosquito-free lounging day or night. Don't expect anything overly fancy, this is the Bahamas, and this house was built in the 1940s but well maintained, very clean, and extremely comfortable to live in. The tiki hut on the beach is only steps from the house but provides an additional oasis...all on your own property. Even though you feel secluded from the rest of the world, you are less than 10 minutes from countless other beaches, restaurants, stores, etc. Great central location on the island overall. Needless to say, we will be returning asap! Amazing owner and property manager...make sure to say hi!!!!
