Paihia Wharf is the departure point for some of the best fishing charters and boat trips in the Bay of Islands. Take a scenic cruise up Waitangi River or go on a dolphin-watching tour. A passenger ferry to Russell, one of the first European settlements in New Zealand, also leaves from the wharf.

Walk down the wharf and soak up the sea views. Look for anglers casting rods nearby fishing competitions for both adults and children are occasionally held here.

Find the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to the north of town this is where the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document, was signed in the 19th century. Browse the comprehensive exhibits at the Museum of Waitangi, which is now located at the site.
