  • A recently restored battery demonstrates how Fort Shirley protected Prince Rupert Bay, the best anchorage on Dominica. The bay itself has a long history. In 1493 one of Columbus' ships entered the bay, and by 1535 the Spanish made it station along their official treasure ship route. Check out the map to see how the fort sits on a volcanic headland, strategically overlooking the bay. Construction of the fort began in 1765 after France ceded Dominica to the British at the Treaty of Paris. The French won it back in 1778, only to cede it again five years later at the Treaty of Versailles. At it's height the fort housed over 600 men, but in 1854 it was finally abandoned as the British and French made up. Today the fort is a public park open for all to visit. Excellent stay, my cottage was super clean, had all the necessities including beach towels, soap, coffee. Bedroom came with AC allowing for a very comfortable sleep. Owners are wonderful , very friendly and helpful.

Fantastic stay. Trish and Kyle were great, the place is quiet, beautiful, within wasy walking distance of Portsmouth, as well as some good local restaurants. Good quality Internet service, and full-sized desks if you need to work. Excellent local guides and excursions can be arranged for you. Highly recommended!

This property is a tranquil retreat in the middle of a forest and adjacent next to a beautiful river that we all loved swimming in! The owners had many great suggestions of things to see and fo nearby, great places to eat, and places to go for this being our second trip to Portsmouth so we had too much to do and lived it all! Our only regret was that we didn’t have more nights here!

Great place, great people, fantastic experience!!!

I stayed at Kootney Resorts for about 10 days for work and it was fantastic! Trish and Kyle were lovely hosts and tremendously helpful. Kyle in particular helped me repair some of my equipment, gave me all sorts of useful info on where to find things, and hooked me up withe the best cuisine in the area (he's a chef so he knows which places to eat). Since I was there on my own I ended up hanging out with Kyle quite a bit, really great guy with a dry sense of humor I really enjoyed. He also helped me out a number of times processing samples (I was there studying the hot springs). The bungalows were really great, super roomy, really nice, with full kitchens and plenty of space to spread my stuff out. The showers are fantastic! I want one at home. Next time I'm in Dominica I'm definitely staying at Kootney again and I'm bringing my wife, who I'm sure will love it. Can't recommend it highly enough, great place, great people, fantastic experience!

Such a comfortable and quaint property! The cottage was very clean and spacious. The kitchen was stocked with plenty supplies and I appreciated the water and bananas waiting on arrival. The closet is huge, as is the bathroom. I also really appreciated the strong water pressure and the temperature in the shower. The location is great with beach, restaurants and grocery in walking distance. Last but certainly not least, the owner Trish is so friendly and helpful! I was only there for a short stay but would definitely come back for longer.

From the free airport pickup to my departure, everything about my stay was superb. Trisha and her affiliated driver Roy were very welcoming and helpful. The rooms had all the needed basics for home food prep, ample space both indoors and outdoors, lovely scenery with consistent birdsong, and a convenient walk to nearby restaurants and the beach. Internet and A/C worked great. Recommended!

The spacious two-bedroom cottage was very comfortable and we enjoyed hearing only the sounds of tree frogs, crickets, and other critters in the surroundings. It's close to Portsmouth and great spots such as Cabrits National Park, Indian River, and Toucari Beach.

My New Favorite

Staying at Kootney was an amazing experience. It is going to be my number one place to stay on the island. I already have a second stay booked in a few months. It is set up just like a cute apartment with an amazingly huge shower, and awesome closet space. The kitchen has everything you need already supplied. There is a really nice patio attached to your bungalow which is great for eating your dinner. The property owners, Trish and Angus, are extremely friendly and I highly recommend spending a few minutes sitting and chatting with them since they are so easy to talk to and treat you just like an old friend. It is completely quiet and peaceful, everyone on the property and in the surrounding area is super friendly and helpful. I can’t wait to get back in a couple of months.
