  • The history of the airfield from 1916 and it's use by the RAF and civil airlines. Manston started its Aviation days as a Royal Naval Station in 1916, with a base at Westgate Bay for seaplanes. The early airfield was on the area now occupied by the passenger terminal. By 1917 Manston airfield had grown to include four underground hangars, its own railway line to Birchington, a power station to generate electricity, barracks for 3,000 men and even an indoor swimming pool. After WW1, training of airmen in airframe maintenance and engine repairs was taught in the School of Technical Training. 1940 and WW2 brought the Battle of Britain. Barnes Wallis arrived in 1943 to test his bouncing bomb at nearby Reculver, before the Dam busters carried out their famous raid. Roland Beaumont arrived with the Typhoon which came to be the most successful ground attack aircraft in WW2.

Manston holiday

A well appointed pretty cottage in a great central location for exploring Thanet and the East of Kent. Very comfortable and peaceful. We had a great week with lots of places to visit without having to travel too far. The owners were very helpful and the booking and arrangements all went smoothly.

A lovely little gem!!

What a beautiful cottage in a fantastic location. Right next to Manston airport with all the RAF & Spitfire history to enjoy. A short drive from so many amenities and ever such easy access to the coast of Kent.The cottage has so much history and the pictures do not do it justice. The living room is much bigger than we expected! The cottage is in a beautiful little quiet courtyard with an easy drive round circle to get through the access archway. The turn in from the road is a little hidden but the host has installed multicoloured lights to help late arrivals find the opening easily. She also called us with very detailed directions and descriptions so we could find the cottage easily, which was really helpful.We were staying in the depth of winter and the cottage heating system did the job of keeping us warm very nicely. The bathroom is modern with plenty of hot water at all times. The kitchen was perfectly adequate for 2 people's needs and the oven cooked evenly and at the temperature we expected (sometimes it's hit and miss in cottages!) but it would be good if an additional oven shelf could be put in I think. One shelf was a bit of a juggle.We loved our stay at this cottage with the ever so warm welcome, wonderful information about the local area and the absolute peace and quiet of the location.I had to work from the cottage for half a day and the WiFi did not let me down, which was great.Highly recommend this accommodation. Simply lovely.

Home from home retreat

A Very Enjoyable Week In Thanet

Annie's Cottage was a delightful property to stay in as we toured the Thanet area. Extremely comfortable, clean, well equipped and very quiet. Suzanne and George, the owners, made us feel very welcome and it proved an ideal base to visit the resorts of Margate, Ramsgate, Deal, Broadstairs, Whitstable and Birchington and also delightful and historic towns and cities such as Rochester and Sandwich - all of these an easy drive from the cottage. We'd certainly stay there again.

The Perfect Place

I rented Annie’s Cottage as I needed a peaceful place to work. Not only did it exceed my expectations, it was fabulous! The hosts Suzanne and George were so incredibly welcoming and friendly. Never intrusive, but there should you have any problems ( I didn’t. Everything was great.) I was sorry to leave. The house, and nearby surroundings, have such a lovely vibe. I will DEFINITELY be returning. In fact, I can’t wait to! So, thank - you Suzanne and George for making my stay so productive. I couldn’t have picked a better place to stay. A perfect place, for sure.

Lovely relaxing stay

We loved the location for both the coast and Canterbury. We are keen cooks and brought all our ingredients with us so can’t comment on local restaurants but the well-equipped kitchen is tiny, which made prepping food and elaborate cooking challenging. The cottage is sweet and perfect for a couple.

A good rest in secluded property not far from the sea front.

I had the good rest that I wanted. The bed is ultra comfortable and the property is secluded and quiet. Gorgeous house with heritage and character but with all the modern comfort . Amazing coast lines nearby and great walks to be done by the sea. Plenty of fresh food, very kind locals and friendly hosts. It was hard to leave! ❤️

Lovely hostess. Warm welcome. Comfortable cottage with everything I needed. For most people it would probably be quiet enough. The bedroom windows lacked double-glazing and with driveway and cars in front, a light sleeper may not find it quiet enough.
