Short Weekend Stay

Very convenient location to Richmond but far enough away to be quiet and cozy. The boat is wonderfully decorated and the view of the river is wonderful. Captain Ron is a lovely and very helpful host!

Comfy and cozy!

Best spot we could have chosen. On the river but not a lot of traffic. The fishing was great. The kid and our dogs had an absolute blast. Captain Ron was great! We cant wait to go back

We did not stay. The vessel was in disrepair with leaks and the odor of mildew/mold,That’s all I’m gonna say and just please give truthful reviews. The pictures on the website are from 10 to 15 years ago. I do not recommend at all. The owner attempted to give me another rental, which was in the same disrepair. I do not recommend at all.

local charm on the James River

this charming, rustic and eclectic houseboat on the James provides a perfect venue to experience the tidewaters history of the Richmond area nestled on an inlet. The marina is clean and very safe when enters through a private gate pass some private homes yet it is very accessible to local amenities, 1 mile away and to Richmond. Staying on the river amongst the sea birds and the title flow enhanced my experience of this historic location. Don’t miss the local Civil War Fort near

Awesome boat, awesome host!!

We had a great time during our stay. The boat is great. Very comfortable. The marina is quiet and has free washer/dryer and ice machine, which were hugely helpful. Capt Ron is a great host! Very responsive and full of great stories....read his book that he leaves on board! We are coming back again in September!

Cozy, similar to our 5th wheel. All systems worked but it was so hot that the AC struggled. Ron was very attentive and a wealth of information about the area.

Captain Ron’s houseboat

It was a new experience and got me inspired to look for a houseboat to buy. We enjoyed cooking, playing Yahtzee , studying and fishing from the deck. My friend caught a catfish & released it.It was a nice time & we really enjoyed meeting Captain Ron. He’s great!

What a great change of pace. Very memorable experience for our family. Everything we needed was right on board. What a huge shower for a boat! The main bed was luxurious. The pull-out couch was very comfortable as a couch but not so comfortable as a bed (needs a mattress upgrade?).

Cozy Houseboat

It was a very relaxing stay! The area is beautiful with plenty of areas to explore nearby! Captain Ron is an absolute pleasure to talk to! And has plenty of local knowledge to share. Bonus.. I caught a lot of fish off the back of the boat! One last thing he gave me a signed copy of the BOHEMIAN SKIPPER which he wrote! Top noch guy :)

Girls weekend

What a treat! Capt. Ron could not have nicer or more accommodating, the boat was clean,comfortable and the perfect size for a long weekend, Our tour of the James River was also quite an experience thank you CaptainTom Lewis (Sails Angels)

Unique Experience

Captain Ron is a gracious and gregarious host. Staying on his houseboat in a quiet marina on the James River was a unique experience. On the upper deck we enjoyed eating breakfast, watching the birds, and toasting the sunsets with a glass of wine. It’s a short drive to the Lily Pad restaurant where we had delicious dinners and great service. The only downside was not having Internet or TV cable service during our stay.

Such a fun experience

This is a great location if you are looking to do something a little different. My wife and I just decided we needed to get away from D.C. for a night with the kids. Our two children (ages 6 and 3) had a blast sleeping on a boat. It is a beautiful location and the kids loved being up on the top deck for the sunset just having some family time together. Captain Ron is such a great guy. We definitely need to come back in the future.

This is our 2nd stay. Cant' say enough regarding Captain Ron! Wonderful gentlemen and tries to accommodate you with anything you need. The boat is a wonderful unique experience. You need to like boats or this is not for you. Look for egrets and herons. Turtle hangs out by boat looking for food. Captain Ron is also a great writer. Check out his book Bohemian Skipper! James River Serenity

Our host greeted us warmly upon arrival. We stayed on the Gia Maria six nights. Overall our stay was good. It would have been better had we been informed on day one that various areas inside leaked when it rained. Rain was in the forecast during our stay. It was stressful the night it rained not having adequate supplies to catch the drips. We learned from the owner that prior to our stay he had made attempts to locate the origin of the leakage but was unsuccessful.

The Gia Maria is a well loved boat.

If you decide to stay on the Gia Maria, be prepared to detox from sound pollution and the stress of the everyday. The marina is private and secure, and life moves at a more natural pace once you get down to the dock. The boat herself is not new or fancy, but she is full of personality, comfort, and charm I had a wonderful time spending full days on the upper deck watching the birds and the turtles and feeling the tension just drifting away with the breezes. Ron is a very attentive host with a huge, kind heart and collection of great stories to share. I can’t say enough about what a wonderful time I had staying here!

Magical idyllic spot on a river full of history

Our stay was perfect. Staying on the boat was comfortable, inviting and an adventure of the kind everyone should have! Full of unique nautical mementos and thoughtful touches, the boat is both charming and functional. Our host Capt. Ron (the last captain of a wooden tug boat on the James and so much more!) is a font of living history and passed down stories of the area in which his family has lived for generations. Just listening to him talk about everything that has happened within that one square mile and In the greater tidewater region since 1607 was a delight that my seventeen year old son will remember for the rest of his life. I woke up to herons playing in this magical place, outside my huge window on the waterline. Sleeping there was like floating on air. The shower was huge for a boat, everything perfectly arranged and sparking clean. Incredible hospitality unforgettable experience. Thank you Capt. Ron we will definitely be back! See you inn Maine.

Ron was amazing with communicating before and during our stay. The houseboat was a bit disappointing though. Im all for roughing it, but this was beyond that. Many things need to be fixed, particularly the leak in the roof, it had been raining the day of our check in and the whole boat smelled musty. I thought we would give it a shot. I woke the next morning with a terrible migraine and we had to leave. I spoke with the owner Ron about this and the things I was concerned about. He told me he would reimburse me for the 2 nights we didn’t stay. Now it’s 3 weeks lasted and when I sent Ron a message about not receiving a reimbursement, he stated he could t recall who I was or the situation. Please be careful folks!
