Swayambhunath is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city, Nepal. It is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in the north-west parts of the temple, it occupies a central position and it is probably the most sacred among Buddhist pilgrimage sites. For Tibetans and followers of Tibetan Buddhism, it is second only to Boudhanath. I was lucky enough to visit Nepal, see it and take some pictures a week before the 2015 earthquake. The temple complex suffered damage in the Nepal earthquake. :-(

More flags than you can pray a prayer at, at the top of the hill that Swayambhunath sits on. If you want your own Buddhist prayer flags, you can buy them from shops and vendors across the city (I mean you can probably get them on eBay too, but it just wouldn't be the same!).

Great stay for the price! Staff were really helpful, room was clean and tidy. The rooftop eating area was really scenic! Location is close to Thamel but away from the noise

Everything at Hotel Shanker is truly great. I really feel at home in this beautiful hotel. The staff are magnificent and everyone is so friendly and helpful. The architecture of this old historical palace is stunning. The entrance and lobby is so beautiful and great for photos. The garden in front is wonderful and the pool is terrific. I highly recommend staying at Hotel Shanker. It’s the only place I stay when visiting Kathmandu. I’m already looking forward to a return visit!! Thank you Hotel Shanker for treating me so well and giving me such great memories and photos!!
