This property was as traditional as it gets. Two Onsens to bath in. Each have separate times for men and women. Provide multicourse dinner that was as traditional as you can get. The breakfast was multiple items and also a classic meal. Very good. Room didn’t have a view but it had traditional tea set up along with kimonos to wear and traditional bedding. We were there only one night so it wasn’t a big deal to not have a view. Staff was very kind and tried to be of help. We got a shuttle ride up to the base of the Monkey territory. That was helpful. Specific staff speak better English than others.

The service is exceptional. I just can’t say enough how much they go out of their way to make you feel welcome and appreciated. The included meals are excellent for those with an adventurous spirit…truly fantastic. Also, be prepared for several courses at dinner. I left every meal quite content. I will return and highly recommend to others.

Our stay was incredible. The hot springs were rejuvenating, the room spacious and comfortable and the staff pleasant and helpful. We would definitely stay again if the opportunity arose. What an incredible experience.

An excellent Ryokan experience. Wonderful traditional food and easy access to the Snow Monkeys. They serve traditional fixed menu breakfast and dinner at designated times. The onsen is open 24 hours. The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful.

We really enjoyed staying at this ryokan. The food and services were outstanding. The onsen was open 24 hours so we enjoyed hot spring at odd hours (due to the jetlag). The Snow Monkey Park is nearby and the hotel offers a free shuttle to the base of the mountain. We would definitely come back.

Wafu No Yado MASUYA was absolutely amazing! Our first impressions were of lovely staff who were welcoming and very efficient with check in and helping us to our room. She even carried our bags even though we offered to lug them to our room ourselves! The room was well appointed, with our own hot spring tub. The heating had already been turned on for us and we were treated to a welcome of traditional Japanese sweets and hot green tea. The ryokan provides yukatas, socks and traditional slippers for wear around the room, the main guest areas and the restaurants. All amenities like toiletries were provided, even razors and hairbrushes! Of course, if you splurge on half board - then you are in for a treat! We enjoyed an 8 course dinner and a similar breakfast, all served in our own dining room with our own waiter. The food was exquisite, service impeccable and the experience outstanding. We absolutely enjoyed our experience and cannot recommend Masuya enough! Treat yourselves!

An authentic experience
Very friendly and helpful staff. They do not speak much English but they managed to explain everything and get us the things we needed. Breakfast and dinner was served in a private dining room with my name on the door. Food was excellent. We also really enjoyed the hot spring baths in the hotel and wearing the yukata they provided for our walk down the onsen streets. They provide a free shuttle to the snow monkey park but you need to take the local bus back or walk. Overall we had a great time!

The property had separate dining rooms for each guest. Overall, the hotel seemed a bit tired looking and in need of updates.

It started with a shuttle from the station & ended with a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park entrance. Every moment of our stay was carefully considered: choose your breakfast time; choose the time for your bed to be made; leave your luggage for easy pick-up at Yudanaka Station. We did not take advantage of the local onsen due to below zero temps but the local area was beautiful in the snow. We had a great stay and could not rate this place & staff any higher. Thank you!

We booked this hotel because it was close to the snow monkeys, but the hotel was a destination in itself. The staff could not have been friendlier or more accommodating. The hotel has two lovely onsens and is next to a street full of other onsens and restaurants. The breakfast was incredible and it was served to us in a private room on the first floor. The onsens were both indoor out door and were very clean. We were greeted with green tea. The futon beds were very comfortable. Traditional robes were provided for us to were in the hotel and to the restaurants and other onsens on the street

It was a lovely stay. Breakfast and dinner was fantastic and the snow monkey park was lovely with the snow on the weekend that we were there. Only problem was our shower was not working well and so we had to use the bucket to shower ourselves. The hotel was very quaint and the staff were very nice.

Lovely staff and had a private onsen on our one night stay, we had a private dining room and were served delicious vegetarian dinner and breakfast by a lovely kind, generous lady who spoke good English called Mariko, she had a great sense of humour! We only told them we were veggies when we got there but they produced a really beautiful array of small dishes that filled us up completely, no going to bed hungry here! Our room had very comfortable futons which staff arranged while we were eating, brilliant! Our driver who picked us up from station when we arrived was called, Keisuke, he was an excellent introduction to our stay and also spoke good English, he also had a great sense of humour! All in all a great authentic Japanese experience! I do recommend Wa hu no yado Masuya! Also, we had western chairs for our meals as our legs couldn’t take the cross legged position and low table. Tv in room and private toilet and bathroom. Thankyou for our wonderful stay! We come back one day! Love, Paul and Anne. Ps we also saw cheeky monkeys out our window!

Our stay was wonderful. There was a shuttle from the train station and to monkey park. The ryokan was very authentic and hospitable. They welcomed us warmly, giving us an overview of the hotel, area, and recommendations for dinner. The hotel was central, easy to walk to food and other onsen.

Amazing Ryokan! Room was very comfortable (traditional Ryokan style). Service the whole time was outstanding. Great location in town, easy walk to all the main attractions in the area. Food was amazing and they even had available the local top notch craft beer. Outstanding value for the price.

You won’t be disappointed
All around incredible stay. Located on the Onsen road, with access to two public baths outside of the hotel, two very well equipped Onsen within the hotel, and the option to reserve a private Onsen as well. Not listed on when booking, but the hotel picked us up from the train station, as well as runs a free shuttle once every morning (940am) to the monkey park. Really nice touch that they should publicize more broadly. Highly recommend getting breakfast and dinner included. Highlight of the experience for me! Relaxing and pleasant stay. Highly recommended, would go back in a heartbeat if we’re ever back in the area.

One of my all time favorite hotel stays!
The most amazing hotel! Traditional Japanese onsen with in room onsen. Yes you pay a little more but this is the place to splurge on your trip. Our room came with dinner and breakfast. I figured maybe buffet food. No way what we got was an elegant traditional 8 course meal in our private dining room. Breakfast was just as lovely also tons of food in our private room. Staff was wonderful. Enough english was understood that we figured everything out. One of my all time favorite hotel stays.

Wafu is an amazing place to stay and be fully relaxed. The place is full of traditional Japanese character and the staff are very friendly and kind, providing A+ service! The food provided was absolutely delicious! A great way to experience traditional Japanese culture. I would highly recommend staying here. Thank you to Kana, who helped us during our stay. She was very informative. The owner also came to meet us and she is a lovely lady. Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience!

Traditional Japanese Inn experience and close to Snow Mobkey Park. They drop you off free. They also recommended a wonderful restsurant for dinner in town. Room was clean and my daughtets and I enjoyed their 8 or 9 dish breakfast the next morning. We stayed 1 night.

The traditional Japanese style room was beautiful and immaculate, and we were upgraded to a river facing room, but what really set this hotel apart was the over the top service. We were going to check in late, so called a day in advance to arrange an 11 pm check in time (check in normally ends at 6 pm), but we never expected to be greeted by a lady in a kimono who not only came outside in the cold to greet us and guide or car when parking, but also insisted on carrying one of our heavy bags to the room and gave us a 20 minute orientation to the hotel. The next morning, she and a similarly attired lady were there to check us out, and our shoes were waiting, each with its own shoe horn and a sign with our name. The two ladies then walked us out to our car (in the drizzling rain!), and stood in the street to watch for traffic before motioning is to pull out safely. Classy service, beautifully performed. Absolutely AMAZING.
