The hotel is well-located, the rooms enormous with very old furniture! A little rundown in places but that’s why the price is low, and I hope no-one “improves” it any time soon!
Do not use the tuk-tuk drivers outside the hotel, or believe anyone who tells you “today is a special day”These people are nothing to do with the hotel. Solo women travellers especially beware
The staff was really lovely, the breakfast was good, and the lobby looks great, but that’s where the compliments end. I wasn’t expecting a luxury hotel, and I understand a full renovation would costs millions, but my room was a mess. The furniture was ripped and scuffed, the tv was broken, only two outlets worked so I had to unplug and replug stuff all the time, the teapot was dirty and missing a lid, the toilet paper holder fell off the wall…. I could go on, but instead I’ll just suggest any future guests manage their expectations.

What can I say? Not a five-star hotel, but a five-star value and historical relic. Queen Elizabeth and Chekov stayed here, so can you.
Perfectly clean and adequate, centrally located.

Lovely Historical building. We had a large room but the water would not get hot or even warm for showers. Hotel just needs to have a bit of a update with new sheets and refurbished bathrooms. We still enjoyed our stay though as the location is great.

A bit worn out, but beautiful historical building
It was close to what I expected, maybe the only two surprises were how huge the rooms were and how much history is there behind this hotel. With all that, with a little more effort in maintaining it, they could make it a dream place. But on the other hand it would probably be much more expensive then, so I kind of liked it as it is.

This is a very old hotel and the rooms are very old too.
The saving grace are the staff. They are ALL fantastic.
One person in particular needs a special mention is Mr Chandika the reception manager. He was just amazingly helpful.

The Grand Oriental is a wonderful building. Unfortunately it has been unsympatheticly renovated many years ago and is tired and worn which maked it difficult for staff to keep it clean.
On the plus side its $1.50 $AUS tuk tuk ride any nunber of great places.
It's got a great dinnig room, open all day
And the staff are terrifically helpful
And it was only $35 aus a night.
I arrived at 1.30 am and it was a bit of a shock but after 4 nights I'd stay there again

The property is old and not maintained well. First room no hot water on first night. Second day water flooding due to AC break down in room. Room change on second day. Limited choice for breakfast. Daily choice of eggs toast butter jam and tea and coffee. Very difficult to order from menu for Lunch or Dinner, Buffet choice every day.
I truly enjoyed my stay here. I loved the historical significance of this hotel. I rated it exceptionally well because one must understand that the hotel is over 175 years old.
Sri Lanka has to recognize the importance of preserving this historical part of town. So much potential in these golden age buildings
My room (301) was the one where Queen Elizabeth the Second stayed when she visited the colony according to the information of the hotel’s history I saw on the wall of the corridor. Awesome!

It was not an amazing experience to say that I might not stay in that hotel in my December visit most probably for two reasons:
1) Room service is not listening to requests- I asked guys to provide with just few milk sachets and I did the request to reception too. They just said ok but did not execute.
2) The bath tub is bit slippery and water was not flowing out smoothly. I told about this to room service but nobody attended for that too.
