  • The second oldest building remaining on The Ohio State University campus, Orton Hall was opened in 1893. It is named after Dr Edward Orton, Sr. who served as Ohio State's first president, OSU Professor of Geology from 1873 to 1899, and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899. Orton Hall is built of 40 different Ohio building stones. In the outside walls, these stones are laid in stratigraphic order according to their relative positions in Ohio's bedrock. The only non-indigenous to Ohio stone used is Indiana Limestone to build the front steps. It was chosen because of its high concentration of embedded fossils. The bell tower was dedicated in 1915 and contains 25,000 pounds of bells that can be heard regularly tolling across campus. Encircling the top of the tower are 24 columns with gargoyle-like figures which are restorations of fossil animals.

My daughters are in college at OWU and OSU. This was the perfect spot for a relaxing weekend together. It's in a great location to get out and about but we mostly sat in the sunshine of the dog park with our 2 pups and enjoyed each other company. The entire cottage is well equiped! We didn't use a fraction of the amenities this time, but we will be back!

What a Treat for Me & My Pups

The Calico Cottage was more of a retreat than the business trip I was using it for! Perfect, quiet space with everything you could need in a convenient location to stores & restaurants. They even have a huge private dog park with a firepit inside of it so guests can hang out while their dogs run around like crazy. We will definitely be back!!

This was easily one of the best STRs I've stayed at. Exactly as advertised, EXCEPTIONALLY clean, modern, thoughtful, and comfortable. Perfect for a couple or small family traveling with pets. The half acre dog park complete with fire pit and seating area makes for an awesome relaxation spot with your fur kids. The owner was lightning fast to respond and always available. I'd book again in a heartbeat.

All you could ask for!

This place is amazing! Very well maintained property and very safe surroundings. The house was updated, cozy but spacious, and had everything you would need. Doc went out of his way to accommodate us, excellent host, great communication, all around good experience. Close to plenty of restaurants, area attractions, and leas than 10 minutes from Alum Creek. Highly recommend for anyone visiting the area!

Lovely Cabin Centrally Located

Beautiful property centrally located. Very easy to get around to Columbus, Polaris Mall, Easton Center, Worthington, and Delaware. There are so many amenities-everything is on premise. The owners thought of everything so there is no need to bring a lot of extra items. Very clean and nicely decorated.Would highly recommend for couples, family, fur baby parents, and parents with young children.

Holiday stay at the Calico Cottage

What a lovely visit at the Calico Cottage. We have family in Powell, and we’re always looking for a close place to stay with our dogs. This was the perfect place, in a great area with just the right amenities. The only downside was trying to get our dogs to leave the amazing dog park on the property. They absolutely loved it too! Will definitely be back.

Nice little getaway!

Doc and Carrie were fantastic hosts. The place was very clean, very comfy and in a great location. We enjoyed our weekend mini trip going to the zoo, shopping, and dining. The dogs had a blast at the dog park playing frisbee everyday. We will definitely be back!

Stayed at Calico Cottage while on a fishing trip to Alum Creek Reservoir. Great location. Minutes from the lake, stores and Cabela’s. Extremely clean and every necessity you could possibly need was provided. Would definitely come back on our next fishing trip.

This was a perfect VRBO to stay for us as a family, our two boxers pups included. The Boxers loved the dog park. We had a fire in the fire pit while the dogs played all night on our fabulous fall football stay. It was an easy drive to OSU campus for the Buckeyes football game.

Great Get Away

Such a cute, homey feel! The dog park was a big hit with our dog, being a city dog, he doesn’t usually get to zoom off leash. Nearby beautiful neighborhood with sidewalks for dog walks. We wanted for nothing, very well stocked kitchen and bathroom. Hot tub was lovely! The hosts even accommodated a late check out to better facilitate our travel home. It was a great get away.

This cottage is fantastic, especially if you have a dog. The dog park made our stay so much better because our pooch was able to run and play off-leash. The cottage is neat as a pin, and Doc has thought of all the little details to make you feel right at home. Will definitely stay again when in Columbus!

"I booked the cottage just a couple of days before my arrival, and everything went smoothly. The owners were great at communicating, and the cottage was perfect—equipped with everything I needed. I felt completely safe on the property. Having traveled to all 50 states, I can confidently say this is one of the best rentals I've found on VRBO. The owner even provided excellent restaurant recommendations. I'm hesitant to share this gem because I want to keep it a secret, but I will definitely be back!"

It has everything

Our 2nd stay on this property. It is amazing - and it has everything, including a hot tub inside. The owners are incredibly nice and they provide many amenities for kids. They are even dog friendly with a wonderful bark park on-site. The location cannot be beat - shopping, restaurants within minutes and the downtown less than 20 minutes away. We will definitely be back again!

Cozy and Convenient

Calico Cottage had everything we needed and more. We stayed for 2 nights, when in the area for a family event. I was impressed that there were even dog bowls and pet wipes, which made it very welcoming for our dog. She loved running in the fenced in dog area too. The owners were very friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend.
