Appreciate this town’s old-world setting and delve into rare sandstone caves that overlook the pristine beach and warm, clear ocean water.

The charming bay of Fish Hoek has a picturesque beach in the shadow of mountains. Traditionally a fishing town, today it attracts surfers, sailors and holiday makers to its sandy coastline. Admire quaint and quirky houses on this sloping terrain overlooking False Bay.

Among the highlights is Fish Hoek Beach, almost 1 mile (1.6 kilometres) of flat, sandy terrain. Practice body surfing, wind surfing and kayaking with locals. Bring kids to swim in the placid, protected water, which is warmer on this side of the cape.

Follow the scenic Jager Walk to encounter rock pools full of marine creatures. Fishermen launch nets on the quieter northern section of the beach. Watch the sky changing colours during the sunrise or sunset in this picturesque haven.

Restaurants and vendors provide a variety of culinary treats, including fish and chips and other seafood. Visit locally owned coffee houses to appreciate the preserved charm and village feel here.

Explore the hilly terrain and encounter the famous caves of the region. Paleolithic skeletons dating back 12,000 years were discovered in Peers Cave. The formation of such caves in sandstone mountains is a rare geological phenomenon.

Learn the history of the area, which was initially used for fishing and whaling. It was a dry section, where alcohol was banned until recently. Note that alcoholic beverages are now served in restaurants and bars, although you can’t buy bottles directly from shops.

The Cape Doctor winds help to alleviate the heat here in mid-summer. Due to the pleasant climate and slow pace of life, the neighbourhood has become a popular retirement destination. Spot whales off the coast between June and November.

The town of Fish Hoek is in its namesake valley about 19 miles (30 kilometres) south of Cape Town on the Cape Peninsula. Take a train to the Fish Hoek Railway Station, which is just one stop south of Kalk BayOpens in a new window and north of Simon’s TownOpens in a new window.
