• A plane trip can be a pleasure if you take the right gear. Firstly, you'll want some basic toiletries, such as lip balm and hand cream, a fresh set of clothes and a few magazines. Secondly, find a spot in your hand luggage for your mobile phone, a charger, any daily medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow too. What to wear on a flight:

• Your main priority is to be as comfortable as possible. Choose easy-to-remove footwear, dress in loose, natural fibers and remember to bring a jacket in case it gets cold in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks.

The trick is to be prepared before you arrive at airport security. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Schwarzsee in the blink of an eye. Follow these tips and get your trip off to a fantastic start:

• Have your ID and boarding pass within easy reach. They're the first things you'll be asked to show at security.
• Your belt, jacket, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your headphones, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them as your turn draws near.
• Electronic devices like laptops and phones will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. No need to worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Remove all liquids and gels from your carry-on luggage. They often need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each product should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a good footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when going through security. Big boots and other bulky shoes are usually subjected to extra screening.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, put them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
