Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a pleasurable experience if you've prepared well. We've made a list of handy hints that will get your Trevi holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• First, put in your passport, official ID, bank cards and medications. Next, you'll want some in-flight entertainment to help pass the time. A juicy novel and a laptop filled with your favourite shows are some great options. If you hope to catch a few z's, a quality neck pillow and some noise-cancelling headphones will also be useful. Finally, make room for a toothbrush and some facial wipes to ensure you hop off the plane feeling fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items can differ between air carriers, the general guide to follow is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes box cutters, razor blades, spray paint and fireworks. Sports equipment like baseball bats, and items that could harm other people, such as pepper spray and firearms, aren't allowed in the cabin either.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of an airplane are no place for a fashion parade. Dress in comfortable layers and pick shoes that are enclosed, flat and easy to pull on and off.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to wander around the cabin or do some simple exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

• Keep your ID and boarding pass handy. They're the first things you'll be asked for by security.
• Next up, both you and your carry-on bag must be X-rayed. To speed things up, take off anything that might trigger the alarms. Items like your coat, belt and headphones will be required to go through the machine.
• Electronic devices like laptops and phones will also have to go through the machine for inspection. Don't worry, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Remove all liquids and gels from your carry-on bag. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray separately. Each product should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a sensible footwear choice as you're less likely to be asked to remove them when passing through security. Big boots and other bulky shoes are usually subjected to additional screening.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, put them in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
