At first glance, this place is fun with lots of character -- the neighborhood is old but charming, the building is historical and attractive, and once inside, the decor is pleasing and cozy, there's a surprising amount of space, and everything seems updated but maintains its old-world nostalgia. However, once we settled in, we found ourselves less and less impressed as our stay progressed. First off, if you're out of shape, you should know that this property requires SO. MUCH. EXERCISE!!!! Like, to the point of feeling like you're dying by the time you unload your vehicle. There are stairs, stairs, and more stairs -- stairs from the street, stairs up the porch, then lots more stairs to the second floor. Those ones are old, wooden, and creaky, so it's impossible not to sound like an elephant tromping up and down them (which is probably annoying to other tenants). We quickly realized the place was a) not very clean, even on the landings, and b) had been remodeled by someone who took a lot of shortcuts. Then we saw scuffs, foundation cracks, weird debris, etc. all over the walls, ceilings, and baseboards/moldings, and dust bunnies/cobwebs were prominent as if the property hadn't been deep cleaned in ages. Most surfaces were clean, as were the linens, but the floor was gross. You're not allowed to wear shoes, yet the panels are uneven and rough; we got splinters, tripped, and our feet were black by the end of the day. There was debris (cotton balls and hair ties) on the floors of the closets. In the kitchen, there was a drawer FULL of snacks, many of which were open, and there was loose food at the bottom of the drawer. In the middle of the night, there was a scratching sound in the ceiling; the next day, we heard a GUNSHOT below us, which turned out to be the cleaning crew exterminating a wild animal in the basement! The furniture in the living room isn't great; the cushions are so flat you feel like you're sitting on a pallet. There was a leak in the kitchen, so pieces of the ceiling crumbled onto the floor and we had to clean it up. The bathroom is cramped. The seal on the outer door to the landing is damaged, so sound travels (we often heard a baby crying, people talking and using the stairs). All in all, the owner was communicative, we felt safe enough, and the place had some lovely elements to it, but those were overshadowed by the unpleasant aspects. I'm sorry to say we wouldn't stay here again.
