"Under new management this icon from the days of Thomas Edison is improving. Always the most convenient choice for folks coming into Penn Station and wanting a location across from Madison Square Garden and central to Manhattan and its many transportation methods, this former masterpiece was allowed to decline over the decades. On the floor I was ensconced on the latest trip, I saw what renovation can do. New carpet, paint and bath fixtures gave the hotel a much cleaner, more modern feel. The rooms are still small, with mostly queen beds and small desks and there are a few annoying habits of the staff as you might expect at such a big hotel - like knocking on your "Do Not Disturb" tagged door at 9:00 in the morning to see when you'll be free so they can do the room and only putting decaf coffee pods in the rooms because "that's all they gave us". Leaking seals on my brand new shower door - easily mopped up with the towels - and an extremely loud flushing toilet were other annoyances, but minor.
Expect major mobs lobbying around the "roaring 20's"-era lobby and even a line to get out the revolving main door and you've got an accurate picture.
Overall, this hotel is moving up and, especially when it's the most fiscally responsible choice in this area in this quality range (look for deals about 3 weeks before check-in) can be a good choice."
