From the moment we entered the property up a long gravel driveway, we were hooked. The main house and our attached gite sit on a hilltop on a bright grassy meadow surrounded by miles of vineyards, so there are no noisy neighbors or traffic noise anywhere nearby.
A hiking trail around the area passes by the gite about fifty yards away, and by following the yellow blaizes you can do an hour loop around the village on foot that takes you up to the Chateau de Monbazillac and the wine tasting center on the grounds. Both are worth visiting for history and for delicious wine at not cost (try the 2011 Chateau Montbazillac -- so sweet and delicious it tastes like sherry). You can buy anything you taste there in the shop, of course.
Our host Martin couldn't have been more welcoming and accommodating, and it was fun to hear his descriptions of the area. He provides his guests with a comprehensive guidebook in English and French that contains valuable information about everything from good local restaurants to using the Internet routers on the property.
The week we spent here was the best of our three weeks in France -- relaxing, great weather, and lots of exploring the wine country.
