This place was perfect and private for just the 2 of us. We loved every thing about it! We enjoyed Indian Pass and looking across the water at St. Vincent Island.

Perfect for our needs. Very clean, great location. The beach itself is pretty narrow, but still room for a chair and an umbrella.

The hideaway has a great view in the day and even better at night since there is no light pollution to hide the stars. Even though it was very near the Indian Pass boat ramp on a very busy fishing weekend, it was quiet and peaceful. Hideaway was tidy and clean and I would definitely stay again.

1. Rear patio door had NO LOCK. 2. Battery on front door quit working. 3. The WIFI password was listed incorrectly on one of the check-in notifications. 4. Dining chairs have canisters on a tile floor - unsafe! Additional stair lighting needed.

The beach view was nice. The inside was clean. A very nice sunset. The people driving up-and-down the beach. Crossing your backyard with full Wheeler's. Golf carts and jeeps is not a pleasure bullet experience for anyone. As soon as you get your stuff, set up on the beach. You got a knitty with a golf cart or an SUV trying to cross where you're at and there's no another for them to go around. This was a really really big problem, I get my beach child and my fishing gear set up Then I have an idiot with a bunch of people riding in a Jeep trying to drive while I'm laying down.

Construction going on in th unit during our stay.
Construction going on units either side.
Older unit needs repairs and updates.
Good location - right on the water - mostly quiet.

Be cautious when booking. A lot of stairs. Both from the parking spot and to the beach. Luckily my 8 month pregnant wife was able to climb them but not without getting out of breath multiple times if I would have known the amount we wouldn’t have booked. Nothing in the details talked about the stairs nor were there pictures of this.

This house is small but perfect for 2 people. Having 2 bathrooms was a plus but I wouldn't put anyone on the sofa bed for more than one night - it was pretty low quality. The kitchen is in much need of supplies. Glasses were in short supply (we had 3 tumblers) and only a few small pots. Fortunately we were planning to eat out for most of our meals but I would have loved to have had more to cook with. The stairs were mentioned in other reviews and they are indeed a climb bringing anything heavy into the house but I guess we needed the exercise.
Everything else was nice and we enjoyed many hours sitting on the deck watching the birds.

Fantastic location and view! Cottage is a diamond in the rough. Cottage needs major renovations inside and out. Except for the relatively new appliances, everything else is outdated: cabinets, wall-to-wall carpeting in bedroom, bathrooms (toilet is leaking in shower bathroom), light fixtures in kitchen cracked, no lightbulb in ceiling light in bath tub bathroom; nasty, dirty table and only one old plastic chair on deck; deck needs to be repaired and painted; the third step is loose going down to the beach almost causing my husband to fall; no water to rinse feet off outside by deck, no water for fish cleaning sink which is full of junk; discarded chairs and air mattresses on side deck, no gas in BBQ.

This was our first time to the Port St. Joe area and we were really just beginning to enjoy our stay. (The location of the home was so quiet and peaceful.) On day two we received notice that a mandatory evacuation was put in place and we needed to vacate the home and call Vacasa for additional details. I called and spoke to a Vacasa agent and he advised that they didn’t yet have a protocol in place for our situation (being evacuated after we arrived). He indicated that Vacasa would be sending out further details in the near future about how our situation would be mitigated since we still had 3 nights left on our reservation. I was very disappointed to learn that Vacasa would not refund nor credit me for the three nights not spent at the home. I completely understand that they had no control over Mother Nature or the mandated evacuations, however, I feel that it is poor business practice not to refund the remainder of our stay or credit it to our account for a future stay. We have used Vacasa several times for our vacation stays and have had wonderful experiences. This experience, unfortunately, will probably lead me to not use their services again. Beware of this policy when planning vacations in the future. I am not upset with the home itself, but rather Vacasa’s customer service/policy.

First, those minuses... The place smells of cigarettes upon entry. It gets better once inside. It may be a smoke-free property now, but someone used to smoke. Second, the kitchen needs a deep cleaning. We don’t mind rustic or worn, but the microwave exterior was pretty gross, for example. Bedroom carpet was a bit funky and old. It’s a bit of a hike up the stairs from the mosquito-infested parking area, but we’re in decent shape and it was always rewarded with the view towards St. Vincent Island once you made it. Spectacular! Mother nature always provided interesting things to see with constant bird watching (including bald eagles). If you like shelling, this stretch of beach will yield many small treasures. The place also had good privacy. There are other houses nearby, but you wouldn’t know it. So overall, it was a good experience, but not great.

All in all, this home was mostly as advertised. A few notes: the living room isn’t as pictured. The couch isn’t a sectional and there is no longer a daybed. The couch they have is a pull out queen so it was fine. There also is no dishwasher. They didn’t advertise one, we just didn’t think about looking for that because we’ve always had one so that was a little cumbersome since we like to cook. The house could also use some pest control… Maybe a monthly spray. We saw several spiders and bugs (all harmless). The other reviews cautioning about the stairs are fair. We are a young family of 4, so it wasn’t a big deal. I could see it being difficult for an older couple. Bring plenty of thick blankets for extra cushion on the fold out. Other than that, it’s exactly as advertised. The issues with the stairs/balcony rotting in the other reviews appear to have all been addressed. It’s super secluded with a lot of greenery surrounding (hence the extra critters).. We woke up every morning and watched dolphins. It was perfect for us. It is a very old house, but it was clean upon arrival. Very quiet. Peaceful. We will be back.

To start with the positives…
The beach house was clean and everything worked (lights, TVs, dryer etc.)
The house was the most private on the beach with trees on both sides, you could not see the houses to the left or right from the private deck.
The negatives or areas for improvement…
The house is very outdated and in need of basic repairs. The VRBO pictures show a grill in good shape. The grill was literally falling apart. The pictures do no show the 20+ steps you have to climb to get to the house. The steps are rotting and covered in mold which makes them very slippery and unsafe when wet. Be aware if you have access issues or must carry heavy luggage up to the house.
The deck is in very bad shape. The wood is beginning to get spongy from decay.
The outdoor shower, which is a shower head on a post, needs the valve handles replaced and the foot wash hose is dry-rotted and is useless.
The screen door entering the house at the master bedroom needs to be replaced.
The photos on VRBO and Vacasa are outdated. The dirty sofa shown in the photos has been replaced as an improvement but that is all.
The toilet in the guest restroom barely flushes.
The bedroom mattress needs to be replaced because it is sunken in the middle and two people cannot sleep comfortably.
The kitchen sink faucet needs replacing and the sink spray nozzle handle was missing.
Basically, this house was exactly what we thought we were getting. My wife and I affectionately were calling this house the Crusty Crab. It is old and crusty and a great place for a couple to enjoy. If some cosmetic improvements are made and the deck/stairs were rebuilt and made safer, this would be the perfect small beach bungalow that a couple and small families could enjoy…assuming you are in good enough shape to haul luggage etc. up the stairs.
Best!

The location was spot on for me. Was looking for a quiet, peaceful getaway on the water and this fulfilled it! But this little cottage needs some TLC. Had some issues that I reported and they responded promptly. I got a good work out climbing the stairs!

View, hvac & cleanliness were awesome. There are too many negatives to list. Steps to the cottage are probably the worst feature but old furniture and poor maintenance also top the list.

We loved the location of Halsell's Hideaway. It was very secluded and right on the beach. The view was great! We enjoyed seeing all the different marine life (ie. blue crabs, dolphins, sting rays, sharks). The house is conveniently located to town, where there are plenty of restaurants and boutiques .
While we would consider staying at Halsell's Hideaway again, the following are areas that need improvement:
-There were no sheets for the pull out couch. We had to go to three different stores in order to purchase some.
-The mattress in the master bedroom is terribly uncomfortable. The lumps are visible with the comforter on the bed!
-The water hose to wash the sand off your feet at the front of the house needs replacing.
-The overall cleanliness is lacking. There were a few dead bugs in different areas of the home when we arrived.

The view at this place was absolutely stunning! Total privacy. Just as described. Be ready to climb some stairs though!
