  • Day 1 of my road trip across the USA brought me to my favorite city in Florida, St. Augustine; the oldest city in the country, and easily one of the most beautiful. 👇🏽 I snapped this shot at Fort Mose Historic State Park. This incredible site is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and the rich history of this place is something that every school should be teaching our youth. 👇🏽 Hidden away in the marshes of St. Augustine is one of the most important sites in American history: the first free community of ex-slaves, founded in 1738 and called Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose or Fort Mose (pronounced Moh-Say). Fort Mose played an extremely important role in the development of colonial North America. 👇🏽 As early as 1687, the Spanish government had begun to offer asylum to slaves who managed to escape from British colonies (the first Underground Railroad ran SOUTH to Florida from the colonies!). In 1693, the Spanish Crown officially proclaimed that runaways would find freedom in Florida, in return for converting to Catholicism and a term for men of four years' military service to the Crown. In effect, Spain created a maroon settlement in Florida as a front-line defense against English attacks from the north. Spain also intended to destabilize the plantation economy of the British colonies by creating a free black community to attract slaves seeking escape and refuge from British slavery. 👇🏽 Fort Mose was the first free African settlement legally sanctioned in what would become the United States and had a total population of about 100. The village had a wall around it, with dwellings inside, plus a church and an earthen fort. 👇🏽 The history of Fort Mose is far deeper, and far more interesting then I can convey on @Instagram so please do your own reading on it and learn more about the very earliest history of what is now the United States.

The staff were very friendly upon check in. The room was very clean. The bathroom was extremely clean, no gunk in the corners or built up around the toilet base. Vinyl flooring throughout and the sheets were soft. The pillows were small squares so bring your own if you are particular about your pillows. I thought they were fine. They had a blackout blind on the window and that was great. The building may look old and not 'high-end' but the inside was new and updated and CLEAN!! The area was quiet and the neighbors were quiet too. I will most definitely stay here again! The wi-fi was quite slow but we were able to hotspot off our phone. I don't count that as a negative cuz many people are using it at one time and that can create lag...it is what it is and did not bother us at all.

The night clerk was nice when we checked in. We were concerned when we pulled up as the outside of the hotel is dated and kind of sketchy at night. The room was clean and definitely more modernized. Bed was comfortable and clean. My husband said next time we will bring a pillow for him, but he has a heavy head as it didn’t bother me. For the money we paid it was worth it.

Room was nice and clean. I appreciated the continental breakfast. It was just a little too noisy for me. Walls are very thin and I could here the neighbors tv all night. Plus its right on the main road so that gets noisy as well.

It is absolutely filthy. There are roaches and it looks like they have not cleaned in days. We went up to ask for a clean room. They said they are fully booked out. We ask for our money back and all he said is he will call the manager. All they did was have the cleaning lady clean our room and refuse to give our money back. The roaches are so bad we had to get roach traps.

We stopped very late went in to see if they had rooms and they said they had two available but none on the first floor so I closed my app. Somehow it charged my card. I spoke to Expedia and they weren’t very nice saying well someone had to put the code in. I didn’t put the code on. I didn’t even have my credit card with me so therefore I couldn’t put it in. I got no help from them. I called the hotel. Expedia called the hotel they told him oh yes, we have a room so we drive back the 22 minutes that we had left and already drove and we get there and she says oh no you can’t check until 3 PM so we can’t do anything for you and I could not get my money back which is absolutely absurd because I did not authorize that charge. The hotel staff was rude and refused to give a refund when I never even checked it was

The staff was friendly and inviting but our room had dirty/sticky floors. We walked around the room barefoot and the bottom of our feet were black. We had to jump in the shower to wash them off and then wore shoes around the room the rest of the time. The mirror in our bathroom had paint peeling from around the edges and was starting to rust. We paid less than $100 for the room but it was still way too much. Next time we will spend more money to stay at a nicer hotel elsewhere.
