"While the Steigenberger Hamburg prodes itself as a true five star premium hotel, and it generally is able to deliver on that promise - there are a few shortfalls that prevented me from rating my recent first stay at the central Hamburg flagship hotel as excellent.
Firstly the positives: the location is truly spectacular and very, very central. The hotel is conveniently reachable via public transportation and it also offers direct access to a (rather pricey) public parking garage. The staff is at the reception and is very friendly - and the breakfast staff is truly fantastic. They treat all guest with such warm hospitality, care and attentiveness - it's truly a special experience. And so is the breakfast buffet, which is of very high quality and offers a great spread of food and beverage items. The food service team is really talented and super nice.
Some areas of improvement: while my room was large, it did lack a certain premium ambience befitting the high price asked. Furnishings and fittings are modern enough, but the style is rather bland resembling a certain Swedish furniture brand. Functionality was also lacking: from power outlets that cannot take adapters nor UK/US style plugs, to stained curtains and light switches hidden behind bedside lamps. I couldn't figure out the AC controls, and the mattress was way too soft.
I had a pleasant stay overall due to the top staff, the great breakfast and the central location. But the rooms need an upgrade to truly feel 5 star."
