This was a last minute booking (two days prior to arrival) for a family of 6 (2 adults, 4 kids). When checking out what the cottage had in the way of amenities, it never occurred to me to check whether it had a shower or washing machine - lesson learned. I wouldn't have booked had I realised that it didn't have either, but that was my fault. The lack of a shower and washing machine seemed a bit odd, and a shower block and communal washing area for these apartments would be a huge improvement.
I also think the cottage is small for 6 people. There is one public room, with a small three seater and smaller two seater sofa. The TV was fine, with standard freeview channels. The dining area doesn't really work as the table is stored in the area under the stairs - fine for two people, but you need to re-arrange the furniture if you want to extend the table.
The bedroom configuration isn't ideal for a family - two double bedrooms and a twin, but I knew that when I booked it. The kitchen is very small, but it was clean and adequately stocked with crockery, cutlery and pots 7 pans. The last criticism I'd make concerns is the reliability of the wifi - it really struggled to cope at times, and there was one evening when it just wasn't available.
The positives were that the cottage was clean and was pretty much as advertised. Great garden and nice view, but the beach down the hill was a real bonus. Quiet and secluded, and within walking distance. The cottage is also really close to Torquay, and Torquay is superb. People are friendly, the scenery in the surrounding area is stunning and there's a huge amount to see and do.
I'd feel I was going out my way to be unkind if I said this was less than a 3 star cottage, but equally, the rating would dramatically improve with access to proper washing facilities - a bath and immersion heater just isn't enough for 6 people.
We had a great holiday, the cottage had a nice feel to it, despite the size, and I think we pretty much got what we paid for - just about VFM, but I wouldn't go back simply because of the lack of amenities. This is a strange anomaly in a competitive market. If those were improved, this would be a brilliant holiday property.
