The cobbled streets and historical yards provide a zigzag of places to explore, with antique shops, independent boutiques and cafes peppering the way. To get a better view of the town and the shoreline, climb the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey (1 mile) or hop on board the Cleveland Trail, which runs alongside the clifftops of Whitby and provides magnificent views out to sea.
