Great value for money-lovely location.
Good location-short journey from city centre. Well equipped room-ensuite family with 2 sets of bunkbeds, seperate toilet and seperate shower room ensuite with sink in room and two mirrors. Beds have power supply and lamp for each bed. Additional two twin plug sockets near radiator. Mattress a little hard for my liking but ok. Clean bedding, beds made up-bring your own towel/s. The range of food on offer throughout the day looked great but due to allergies/intolerance didn't try anything from the menu. Polite and helpful staff. Clean communal areas with lots of games available for families or friends to use whilst onsite. Beautiful well kept grounds although persistent rain and wind meant I only looked at it through the windows. Hope to revisit later in the year. Recommend as great value for money.

The staff was lovely and the accommodations were very clean and tidy. It was a very easy walk into the city center and we are glad we have the experience. The set up for the shower and toilet was tight, but it made sense if one is traveling with others who are not their family.

Amazing experience!
I came with my friends to York for the for the first time, and the stay here made the overall experience wonderful. Everything was perfect, and in the morning we had a nice breakfast. I would stay here again on my next trip to York :))

Great Location in York.
This is a well provisioned youth hostel with attentive staff.The location in York is excellent - it is a 20 minute walk alongside the river to the city centre. You can leave your car in the YHA car park. Noise from the heating system / extractor fans was an issue - it wasn't the quietest place. Also not cheap! Budget hotels can be cheaper than YHAs these days, but YHAs have kitchens and social spaces that make the difference.

First time staying in a hostel but will definitely use again. The experience was excellent, the staff were helpful and friendly the rooms were clean and was perfect for what we needed for the night

PROS: Location is great, grounds well kept, there is food and drink served, decent sized kitchen area, laundry (1 washer/1 dryer- staff failed to put note on the dryer or tell guests that it was out of order:( so I had to pack wet clothes), lg. common area with tables inside and out, and the staff is nice, though most were maybe too young to provide good customer service. Cons: This is NOT a place to stay if you have physical disabilities- it is a warren of halls, stairs, and doors leading to more halls, stairs, and doors. There is no elevator or convenient exit/ entrance to get from the main building to the strictly accommodation building. I found desiccated ice cream running down the wall that had probably been there for a few weeks/ month. They did come and clean it promptly, however upon remaking my bed, I noticed the duvet cover on my blanket had blood on it. Not mine. More than likely a stain that did not wash out, but glaringly obvious for whoever "changed" it. I had noticed a hair on my bed on my 1st night, but I thought maybe it was just the cleaners. At this point though, I felt like maybe this room hadn't been cleaned. The manager apologized via email, and the cleaner put a new sheet on the bed, but when I told him about the blood he blamed the laundry service. Maybe so, however NO ONE came to take it away? Disappointed by lack of customer service. I was offered a beverage as a token, but it was as I was leaving. I would stay here again, but would do a clean chec

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed our wonderful location, although we are sorry that your stay did not live up to our high standards. As our main building is an older structure, it does have some winding corridors and most of our rooming is on the 1st floor. For those guests who require easier access we do have some ground floor rooms in our main area, however, these do get booked up relatively quickly as they are very popular. For security reasons, for those guests staying in our annex building we can ask that they do go through our main entrance, however, if a guest does need ground floor access and are staying in that building this can be requested from reception.We are incredibly sorry that the condition of your room was not acceptable, and are glad that our team did their utmost to remedy this for you. This is the norm for our hostel, and has been followed up with our housekeeping team. Our beds are changed fresh for each new occupant, and we do dispose of sheets that arrived to us soiled - clearly, this was missed and we hope that your next stay with us will be in-keeping with our typical high standards.Thank you once again for the review.

Our family of five stayed here for two nights while visiting York and couldn’t be happier with our stay. We walked to the old city several times each day and the breakfast was great!

Not so good. Stayed one night. No light in shower room when having a shower and no lightswitch to be be able to turn off the light in the separate toilet room and the noisy extractor fan stayed on in there too. Bed sheets were clean. Beds rock solid. Ok for one night. 25 min walk to the centre.

I would like to thank the YHA York staff, Charles for his amazing service. He was very prompt in responding to my problem. The staff in charge of the reception in the morning 22/01 was helpful as well. I remembered I took the room card for me but lost it and it wasn't in my hand, the staff was very patient and allowed me going into the corridor that required access card and I found my card dropped at the door. The staff at the YHA York are amazing, thanks.

Unexpected surprise
Hotels.com failed to say that a ‘private room’ meant a shared bathroom with up to 16 others in that block. After speaking to the receptionist it seemed this was a common theme with hotels.com customers. Beds were surprisingly comfortable. Cheap and cheerful night stay if your comfortable sharing a tiny toilet and shower cubical with others.

The majority of our rooms have en-suite facilities, so although everyone on a corridor has access to the shared bathrooms, you will usually only be sharing them with one other room. Check in wasn't good - waited half an hour after walking in rain. Reception staff very slow and not courteous. No food available at 8pm. No clear instruction as to where room was. Noisy in morning at 8am. Doors banging late at night (1am).
