Barter Theatre, located in Abingdon, Virginia, opened on June 10, 1933, when the country was in the middle of the Great Depression. Most patrons were not able to pay the full ticket price. Robert Porterfield, founder of the theatre, offered admittance by letting the local people pay with food goods, hence the name "Barter". The original ticket price for a play was 40 cents, or the equivalent in goods. In 1946, Barter Theatre was designated the State Theatre of Virginia. "I very rarely leave a less than stellar review when I am traveling but I was not impressed by this hotel or its staff. Apparently they checked me in to the wrong room. We checked in after 10pm so the moment we got in to the room we showered, brushed teeth and climbed in to bed. The front desk called up and told is we were in the wrong room and acted like it was my issue to solve. They also expected us to pack up our stuff and change rooms to the correct one. Not only was that a huge inconvenience to us but likely to the people who were trying to check in to their correct room. We already utilized things in the room so it would have needed to be stripped and cleaned. Just over all super unprofessional from the staff. The beds were also extremely uncomfortable. "
