Travel Guide
American Samoa
Explore rugged coastlines, hike past peaceful villages and shop for coconuts and local handicrafts in outdoor markets in this island region.

Comprising five main islands, American Samoa is a tropical territory in the South Pacific Ocean with swaying palm trees and sparkling beaches. Journey through coastal rainforests, hike up volcanic mountain summits and visit a marine sanctuary that houses many varieties of turtle species.

The indigenous Samoan people lived on the islands for centuries before the first contact with Europeans in 1722. Today, Samoans make up the majority of the population and Samoa is one of the most widely spoken languages. If you only speak English, don’t worry many residents are bilingual, so you are unlikely to encounter communication troubles.

Begin your travels on the largest island, Tutuila. Stretch out on white sands and find hidden coves to explore. Visit the Pago Pago Harbor for stunning views out to the sea. To meet the locals, go shopping in Fagatogo Market, which hosts food and souvenir stalls as well as live entertainment. Another local gathering place is Leone. This village features the island’s first church, which is often used for services on Sunday mornings.

For a tropical adventure, head to Pola Island in search of the remote beaches and dramatic cliffs that tower over its coast. Hike through Amalau Valley and be alert to spot tropical bird species. Climb up the steep trail to Mount Alava for a peaceful walk through lush mountain rainforests.

Find yourself in paradise on the islands of Ofu and Olosega, two land masses linked by a bridge. Go swimming on Ofu Beach, a stretch of white sand lined with palm trees. Scuba dive off the coast to observe fish and reef sharks up close. A stunning coral reef makes up the Ofu section of the National Park of American Samoa.

Fly to American Samoa from Samoa or Hawai’i. Buses are a great way to see the villages and towns, though renting a car will give you more flexibility to explore on your own schedule.

Stay in American Samoa to stretch out on luxurious beaches, mingle with locals in lively markets and to head underwater to observe local marine wildlife.
