Devonport

Auckland

A street lined with shops, including a restaurant named Portofino.
A coastal cityscape with a prominent tower, a harbor with boats, and residential areas.
A cafe with outdoor seating, surrounded by greenery and flowers.
A coastal town with a bridge over the water, sailboats, and residential buildings.
A historic hotel with a prominent facade, palm trees, and a clear blue sky.

Auckland’s city centre feels like another world when compared to this scenic waterfront suburb, filled with great restaurants, art galleries and fine beaches.

Take a ferry trip across Waitemata Harbour and in just 10 minutes you’ll find yourself in the charming suburb of Devonport. Spend a day on one of the attractive white-sand beaches or browse the quirky shops for unique gifts and souvenirs. Devonport has some of Auckland’s finest cafés and restaurants, so make sure you stop for a bite while you are here. Don’t miss the stunning views of Auckland city centre from the suburb’s twin peaks.

Devonport is located at the southern tip of Auckland’s North Shore. Historically, the area was a popular holiday retreat for city dwellers. The arrival of regular, high-speed ferries and better infrastructure has meant that Devonport is now very much a commuter suburb, but it still retains much of its holiday-feel charm and is a popular day-trip destination with locals and visitors alike.

The best way to get here is by ferry to the famous Devonport wharf. Take a walk through town and you’ll notice a number of historic buildings and some fine art deco architecture. The Victoria Cinema is said to be the oldest in the southern hemisphere.

Browse the gift shops, antique stores and art galleries or enjoy a coffee in one of the many great cafés. Take a walk up Mount Victoria for splendid views towards Auckland city centre. Here you will find the remains of a World War II shelter. You can learn more about Devonport’s military past in the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum.

Spend some time swimming and sunbathing in the safe waters of the town beaches. Don’t miss a visit to a local bar or restaurant for some evening entertainment. Make your way back to the city centre on the ferry and enjoy the stunning night views of Auckland’s skyscrapers.
