We live in Boca Raton and vacation in the Fl Keys often. Boca Grande beaches are ok very rocky due to all the shells. There is nothing to really do and a couple of “ok” restaurants.
We know and love Old Florida charm and this just doesn’t really capture that at all. The small local shops that you see so often in KeyWest and other tourist areas are really no where to be found. Instead you have some public beaches a more of an upscale residential downtown that doesn’t capture the reason you came here, the island vibe. I felt as if I needed a Passport for The Fishing Pier (and I’m of Latino decent). And the trail from the Boca Grande “Hotel” (more on that later) to the Pier is a weed filled, dirty, unsafe, path littered with garbage.
The Boca Grande Hotel is really more like a Motel with a Sanyo TV that didn’t even work with furniture and wallpaper from the 90’s. The atrium has a broken fountain that is poorly disguised with some bad landscaping. And the hallway is dark and doesn’t really feel that safe.
I witnessed guys who looked like they came from a job painting, drunk stumbling out of the car onto the property headed to the Pier. And the “Hotel” is really a Motel in a Florida strip mall.
You also have to pay $6.00 every single time you enter Boca Grande toll bridge no exceptions, no day passes or hotel discounts at all! I took a wrong turn and had to pay again to get back onto the island, yup not kidding. The surrounding area off site is just as underwhelming.
