Very helpful with check-in and accommodating any requests we had. Breakfast was amazing, and the bartender made excellent cocktails. The history of the building itself was fascinating. Once we figured out the parking, we were very happy with our stay. We will definitely return.

Bathroom was looking tired, tiles loose on wall and taps falling apart. Silicone needed replacing. No air conditioning available despite the controllers etc present. Fans provided but those weren’t much help. Breakfast was good and externally hotel looked lovely

Don’t stay at this hotel June to September. It is not able to handle hot weather. Our room was like sauna. The WiFi was poor at best with no or poor internet connection many times. The Coal Exchange is a grand old building with an interesting history, but that’s no excuse for how shabby and dim it is. I feel like it could be thoroughly modernised without losing any of its historical charm. It wasn’t made obvious to me when I booked on Expedia, but I had apparently booked a wheelchair accessible room - I guess it was the last room available at the price I wanted to pay. It was like staying in a dark hot dungeon. It was dark because it only had one window and it looked out onto the entranceway at ground level, thereby affording no privacy - I didn’t feel that I could open either the curtain or the window. There were two fans in the room that just blew the warm air around. A member of staff told me they were planning to start putting aircon into the rooms but they didn’t know when. Every room in the hotel is supposed to have a big jacuzzi bathtub but, it turns out, the accessible room just has a big wet room with a shower, no bath at all. I thought I was treating myself when I booked this stay but I would’ve been much better off in a cheaper, more modern hotel.

Good for a reasonably priced stay if you go midweek. Bathroom in my room was a bit odd, had a massive jacuzzi bath with a rainfall shower head over it, no shower curtain or screen.The shower head needed a thorough clean so who knows what state the jacuzzi jets would’ve been in. Seems a very odd choice for a hotel bathroom in a “4*” hotel. Felt a bit seedy motel like. Looking a bit worse for wear in places in what is a magnificent older building with some great features. There was an issue with the hot water for a few hours in the morning but was rectified in time to be able to get a hot shower, thankfully. Wouldn’t rush to return here, not terrible but distinctly average.

The Coal Exchange is a lovely old building which has been turned into a hotel with large bedrooms and bathrooms. The bed was comfortable although there was some wear showing on the headboard/ wall behind the bed(room 143). The bathroom had a large Jacuzzi bath and a rainfall shower. The toiletries provided smelt gorgeous! There were two large windows looking out onto the road beside the hotel which was surprisingly quiet. Unfortunately, because the weather was extremely hot and there was no air conditioning the room was warm, especially overnight. There was a fan and we left the windows but it still was difficult to sleep. Breakfast was good, with plenty of hot and cold choices on the self service buffet. The pain au chocolat and croissant were particularly good, far better than usual hotel standards and I enjoyed a gooseberry yoghurt and choice of cheese! All the staff were helpful and we were able to park outside the hotel because parking is only paid between 8am and 6pm.
