On arrival at Fair Maid and walking through the front door we fully realised the true size and luxury of what was on offer. All the rooms were larger and more spacious than the photos lead you to believe. Both the bedrooms are of generous proportions, not just a bed and other furniture crammed into the room, there was plenty of room to move about. Both the shower rooms were of High quality, and having a downstairs toilet was wonderful and handy.
The outside space was larger than the photos made out, with a large table and chairs to eat your breakfast or afternoon tea.
The addition of the babbling brook next to the patio(fenced) with the resident ducks and guinea fowl was an added bonus. Watching them feed, clean themselves and sleep in the sunshine.
The village is very quiet and lovely for a stroll. We regularly walked to the village car park and at the top end there were 2 donkeys in a small paddock, who we always took some apples to as a treat. They got used to us coming everyday.
We went to The Merry Harriers pub at Westcott, south of Cullompton. We had sunday lunch which they serve from 12 noon to 8pm. The portion sizes are very generous. The puddings are excellent too. We also went on Thursday evening as it is steak night - 2 x rump steaks with a free bottle of house wine for £25. The meat is supplied by the local butcher in Cullompton - Veaseys. Excellent quality. Cannot recommend The Merry Harriers enough, the staff were very attentive throughout, even bringing our dog Kris (retired black lab guide dog ) a bowl of water for him to wash down the odd chip that came his way.
So if you are looking for a luxury quiet break, just 5 minutes from M5, then Fair Maid is the cottage to book.
