NOTICE: We have owned and managed our condos for over 25 years. We have never had a guest bitten by a fish or shark in our area of the beach. NEVER!.
Experts explain why there are so many shark bites in Volusia county. While Volusia is a popular beach destination, there are specific environmental factors that contribute to the many shark bites. And it turns out that the Ponce Inlet outflow brings in a lot of nutrients. The surf break attracts many surfers to a part of the ocean rich in neutrients that also attract many fish species such as mullets and menhadens. Their shark preditors follow. Because the surf is very turbid the sharks can't see well plus 50 or 60 arms and legs dangeling off surf boards its only a matter of time the blacktips mistake a foot or hand for a fish. So the majority of shark bites are only at the inlet.
Here are just a few precautions beach goers can take to avoid shark bites. (1) Don't wear shiny jewelry because it catches the light like scales on fish. (2) You should not go in the water if you see lots of bait fish swimming around, especially if they are jumping around because that means something might be chasing them. (3) Don't swim alone which makes you an easier target. (4) Don't go swimming at dawn or dusk. (5) Don't go swimming where fishermen are fishing. (6) Swim near a lifeguard.
