If you're poorly prepared, airports and flying can be testing. But there's no need to hit the panic button just yet. Follow these tips and tricks for a hassle-free start to your time in Er-Rich. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a cruisy experience if you take the right stuff. • Caused by sustained periods of immobility, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect passengers on long-haul flights. Lower your risks by staying hydrated, keeping your legs moving and wearing compression socks to help your circulation.

• Be sure to keep your passport and boarding pass at hand. They're the first things you'll be asked to show at security.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything on you that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.

• Any liquids or gels, such as shampoo or hand cream, that you want to take on board must be no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), zip-lock bag.
